Boston police arrested a Dorchester man early Friday, Sept. 25, after officers say he pointed a loaded handgun at them inside a Blue Hill Avenue apartment in Mattapan, where police later found crack cocaine packaged for sale. The Mattapan gun arrest suspect was wearing an electronic monitoring device, according to the Boston Police Department.
Police identified the suspect as Alfonso Muniz, 47, of Dorchester. Officers from District B-3 responded at about 12:13 a.m. to a call seeking to remove someone from an apartment in the 1300 block of Blue Hill Avenue.
What Police Say Happened on Blue Hill Avenue
According to the department’s account, officers learned on the way that the man was intoxicated and being verbally aggressive toward the caller. The caller let officers inside, where they saw the suspect standing in a partly open bedroom doorway. Police said he raised his right arm and aimed a gun at officers, then hid it behind his back and backed into the bedroom while ignoring repeated orders to drop the weapon.
Backup units helped evacuate other residents from the apartment, and officers then worked to de-escalate the standoff, police said. The man eventually came out of the bedroom and was taken into custody after a brief struggle. The department’s statement did not report any injuries.
Handgun, Ammunition and Crack Cocaine Recovered
In the bedroom, officers recovered a 9mm Smith & Wesson M&P Shield loaded with six rounds, a box of .380-caliber ammunition, six plastic bags holding a total of 21 grams of crack cocaine, and an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. The department said Muniz remained combative at the station and refused to go through booking.
Charges in Dorchester District Court
Muniz is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges of assault by means of a dangerous weapon (a firearm), a firearm violation with three prior violent or drug crimes, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and trafficking cocaine. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The arrest is one of several recent gun-related cases along the Blue Hill Avenue corridor. Earlier this week, detectives sought two men in a Dorchester armed robbery on Blue Hill Ave, and Transit Police investigated a fight aboard the MBTA No. 28 bus in Mattapan.
