ChatGPT visual ads are coming to image generation: OpenAI said on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, that it will begin testing a new display-style ad format inside ChatGPT later this month in the U.S., showing labeled image ads alongside pictures users ask the chatbot to create. The company also expanded its ad measurement partners and announced brand-safety pilots, according to OpenAI’s announcement.
How ChatGPT visual ads will work
OpenAI describes the format as images that show product inspiration, product usage, or the experiences a product makes possible. The first test will run only during image generation, with an initial group of advertisers. The company says the ads will be clearly labeled, will remain separate from the image being created, and will not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
OpenAI framed the move around scale, saying ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people each week and that advertising lets it serve a larger market than subscriptions alone. TechCrunch noted that OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost tiers, expanded them to India in August, and is rolling out the visual format as Meta’s free Muse assistant competes for the same users.
New measurement partners for advertisers
The bigger story for marketers may be measurement. OpenAI said integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp will let advertisers send conversion data from existing systems, and it now supports attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin. It is also working with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on geo-based incrementality experiments.
OpenAI shared early partner results. It said DV Rockerbox found WeightWatchers’ attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads was 15.3% lower than its blended paid-search benchmark, WorkMagic reported that 67% of incremental purchases for wellness brand Dose came from net-new customers, and Triple Whale found 93% of Portland Leather’s visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new. Those figures come from OpenAI and its partners and have not been independently verified.
Brand safety pilots with DoubleVerify and IAS
To reassure brands, OpenAI said it is developing brand-suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science that test its safeguards in a controlled environment without access to private user conversations. Qualifying advertisers can also use a new Negative Phrases control for brand-specific placement limits. The company said its guardrails aim to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations.
What it means for ChatGPT users
For free users, image prompts are about to become commercial real estate. Shopping and try-on features, such as the ChatGPT virtual changing room, already push the app toward product discovery, and visual ads extend that path. The rivalry with Meta is also heating up after retailers pushed back on AI shopping agents, as in our report on Amazon blocking Meta’s Muse shopping agent. Developers following OpenAI’s platform push can see the agent side of that strategy in our coverage of OpenAI Dots AI agents.
TechCrunch pointed out that ads could also nudge casual users toward paid plans. For now, the test is limited to the U.S. and a small advertiser group, so the real verdict will come once the format reaches more of ChatGPT’s weekly audience.
