War trackers: the numbers behind the conflicts

Each figure is shown with who reported it and when. Figures from a party to a war are labeled as claims. Totals are not comparable across conflicts because sources count differently.

About our war news coverage

The Boston Report’s War News hub collects war news today in one place: daily Ukraine war updates, Iran war news, reporting on the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea shipping, U.S. military news and NATO news, and coverage of drone warfare and missile attacks. Our coverage centers on four wars: Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine (since Feb. 24, 2022), the Iran war that began on Feb. 28, 2026, the Israel-Gaza war that began with the Hamas-led attack of Oct. 7, 2023, and Sudan’s war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (since April 15, 2023). We also follow flashpoints from the Taiwan Strait and the Korean Peninsula to eastern Congo.

War numbers are hard to pin down. Governments at war publish claims that cannot be checked, UN agencies count only what they can verify, and reporters often cannot reach the front line. We label each figure with its source and date, keep documented facts apart from claims, and do not add together numbers that were counted in different ways. Claims by parties to a conflict are attributed by name and labeled under our source-label policy.

Start with the war trackers at the top of this page for the latest data, use the theater sections for recent reporting, and read the explainers for background on weapons such as glide bombs, Patriot interceptors and drones. For U.S. forces, see military news and Massachusetts military history; for diplomacy, sanctions and alliances, see the Geopolitics hub.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get war news today?

Right here. The War News hub collects today's war news on Ukraine, Iran, Gaza, Sudan and the Indo-Pacific, with live war trackers at the top of the page and the newest reporting in the Latest war news section. Every figure shows who reported it and when.

What does the War News section cover?

War News covers the fighting itself: battlefield developments, strikes, casualties and displacement, weapons and military technology, and defense budgets and industry. Diplomacy, sanctions and elections are covered in the Geopolitics section.

Which wars do you track?

The Russia-Ukraine war (with a dedicated data page), the 2026 Iran war, the Israel-Gaza war and the war in Sudan. We add a tracker only when a credible source publishes regular, dated figures.

Where do the war tracker numbers come from?

Each figure comes from a named source and is shown with its date: Ukraine's General Staff (Russian losses, labeled as claims) and the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission (civilian casualties) for Ukraine; Gaza's Ministry of Health as reported by UN agencies for Gaza; Israel's Foreign Ministry for the Oct. 7, 2023 attack; and the International Organization for Migration's Displacement Tracking Matrix for Sudan.

How often are the trackers updated?

Ukraine war figures refresh automatically about twice a day. Gaza and Sudan figures are updated by hand when UNRWA and IOM publish new reports, roughly every two weeks for Gaza and monthly for Sudan. Each card shows its as-of date.

Why do casualty figures differ between sources?

Sources count differently. The UN counts only cases it has verified one by one and says real totals are likely higher; governments and parties to a war may count combatants and civilians differently or report claims that cannot be checked. We show who reported each number rather than combining them.

Are Russian loss figures independently verified?

No. They are claims published daily by Ukraine's General Staff, a party to the war, and are labeled that way. Russia does not publish comparable figures.

How does The Boston Report handle unverified battlefield claims?

We attribute every claim to the person or government that made it, say when it cannot be independently confirmed, and add confirmation from established news organizations or official documents before reporting serious allegations.
