Glossary of stat definitions
- OPS
- On-base percentage plus slugging percentage, a quick measure of a hitter’s overall production.
- ERA
- Earned run average: earned runs allowed per nine innings pitched.
- WHIP
- Walks plus hits allowed per inning pitched.
- WAR
- Wins above replacement, as shown by ESPN: an estimate of how many wins a player adds over a replacement-level player. Different sites calculate it differently, so figures will not match Baseball-Reference or FanGraphs exactly.
- Quality start
- A start of at least six innings with three or fewer earned runs allowed.
- Rank
- Position among all 30 teams; “T-” means tied. For runs allowed, ERA and WHIP, 1st is the lowest. Ranks are computed by us from ESPN’s team data for all 30 teams.
Ratings explained
Where the ratings come from. Player ratings are MLB The Show 26 overall ratings. Opponents are shown by record only. Coach and staff rows show official records only.
What they are not. The Show ratings come from the game’s developer and are adjusted during the season, so a player’s number can differ between sites and dates. They are not a Boston Report grade, and we do not invent ratings.
Gaps. We show only the 26 highest-rated rostered players. No published team rating or strength-of-schedule model exists yet for the 2027 MLB schedule. WAR is shown only in the leaders table as ESPN reports it; we did not pull Baseball-Reference or FanGraphs tables.
