A U.S. fighter jet destroyed an Iranian Revolutionary Guard surface-to-air missile launcher on Qeshm Island after the Guards fired a missile at a U.S. aircraft over the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported, citing a U.S. official, as relayed by Iran International. U.S. officials called the strikes limited and defensive and said they did not mark a return to full-scale war. Day 249 of the Iran war opens with diplomacy stalled over who moves next and with Election Day in the United States, where President Donald Trump has said no new offensive will come before the vote.
Key takeaways
- The U.S. struck an IRGC missile launcher on Qeshm Island in what officials called self-defense; the Wall Street Journal reported a series of limited, mostly unannounced U.S. strikes there in recent weeks (see Hormuz and Qeshm).
- Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim three tankers exploded after hitting mines on an “unauthorized” route [!Unverified claim, IRGC]; no ship was named, and Britain’s UKMTO reported only a burning dhow near Khasab, Oman, with its crew rescued.
- U.S. Central Command repeated that mines on primary transit routes have been cleared; the IRGC demanded proof.
- Vice President JD Vance said talks have made progress, while Iran’s parliament speaker said the next move is Washington’s and a senior Iranian official told Reuters a deal remains far off (see Diplomacy).
- Brent crude edged up about 0.5% to $105.25 after the Qeshm reports, following a 7.63% drop on Monday, Iran International reported.

Hormuz and Qeshm
The Qeshm strike came after the IRGC fired a surface-to-air missile at a U.S. aircraft in the strait, Axios reported, citing a U.S. official; a U.S. jet then destroyed the launcher. Iranian state news agency IRNA had earlier reported several explosions on the island. The Wall Street Journal reported the U.S. has carried out a series of limited, mostly unannounced strikes on Qeshm and elsewhere in recent weeks, which officials described as defensive, according to Iran International and The Times of Israel.
The IRGC said three oil tankers caught fire and exploded after hitting mines over the previous 24 hours while using an “unauthorized southern route” with radar and navigation systems off, Arab News reported. It did not name the ships, their flags or the time of the incidents, and a separate Iranian army statement claimed a fourth tanker caught fire east of the strait [!Unverified claim, Iranian military]. UKMTO reported a fire and sinking nine nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman, but identified the vessel as a dhow and said the crew was safely evacuated. The IRGC also claimed it captured a U.S. MQM-170 drone [!Unverified claim, IRGC].
Diplomacy
Vance said Monday that Washington had made progress toward a negotiated settlement, Al Jazeera reported. Iran says the U.S. must first lift its naval blockade and meet its demands. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Iran had sent a strong response and that the ball is “in Washington’s court,” while a senior Iranian official told Reuters a deal remains far off, Iran International reported.
Qatar said it is still relaying proposals between the two sides, and a Qatari delegation was reported heading to Tehran, according to The Times of Israel and Iran International. Trump told Fox News a deal had a very good chance but that the U.S. might have to go after the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear-linked site if there is none. Our analysis of the weekend Doha round is in Doha Talks End Without a Breakthrough.
Gulf states and the Houthis
The Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted and destroyed a drone over the Mecca region after repeated waves of Houthi attacks on the kingdom; it did not say where the drone was launched, The Times of Israel reported. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran has no hostility toward Gulf Cooperation Council states and wants regional security arrangements without foreign forces, Iran International reported.
Inside Iran
Iranian authorities said two men, Amirhossein Maleki and Amirhossein Ebrahimi, were hanged over January unrest in Isfahan after the Supreme Court upheld their sentences, Iran International reported. A police officer was killed in Saravan in Sistan-Baluchestan province in what Fars News called a terrorist attack.
Israel and the West Bank
Israeli forces arrested six Palestinians near Jenin who allegedly tried to build crude rockets, and settlers set fire to vehicles and a building after the evacuation of the Givat Ora Yisrael outpost, with 18 settlers detained, The Times of Israel reported. The Israeli military ended an 11-day operation in the Deir Baha area of Hebron.
