What to expect in Boston today
The NWS hourly forecast shows temperatures in the mid-50s around 9 a.m., climbing to the mid-60s by early afternoon and peaking near 68 degrees between about 3 and 5 p.m. Skies go from patchy fog and clouds in the morning to sunny by early afternoon. Hourly rain chances stay in the low single digits through the evening, and temperatures ease back to around 60 degrees by 10 p.m. under partly cloudy skies.
Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Boston (listed by the NWS as Columbus Day). If you are taking the T, the MBTA runs a holiday schedule; see our MBTA holiday schedule for Oct. 12 and the MBTA service alerts page. Morning fog can slow drivers before 10 a.m.
Tuesday: showers and possible thunderstorms
The NWS forecasts a chance of showers Tuesday morning between 7 and 10 a.m., then a chance of showers and patchy fog under cloudy skies, with a high near 64 and an east wind around 9 mph. NWS text puts Tuesday’s chance of rain at 50%. Tuesday night, showers are likely before 8 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms are likely between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m., with a 60% chance of rain and a low around 58. The NWS expects rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch for each of those periods, so this looks like a damp commute rather than a soaking.

Midweek and Friday rain
Wednesday brings a break: mostly sunny, a high near 70 and a west wind of 6 to 10 mph. Thursday is sunny and cooler, with a high near 62. Showers become possible after 1 a.m. Friday, and Friday itself is the wettest day of the week in the current forecast, with rain showers, mostly cloudy skies, a high near 63 and an 80% chance of rain in the NWS text forecast. Showers continue Friday night as the wind turns west at 13 to 18 mph and the low drops to about 46.
Weekend outlook: a cold, windy turn
The weekend is where the forecast changes most. Saturday has a slight chance of a shower before 11 a.m., then mostly sunny skies, but the high is only near 51 degrees, with a northwest wind of 18 to 23 mph and gusts as high as 36 mph. Saturday night is partly cloudy with a low around 37 and gusts to 31 mph, the coldest night in the current seven-day forecast. Sunday is sunny with a high near 53 and a west wind around 12 mph, and Sunday night is mostly clear with a low around 42.
For anyone planning outdoor weekend events, foliage trips or games, that means dressing for wind chill on Saturday rather than for the near-70-degree weather of Monday and Wednesday. Forecasts five or six days out carry more uncertainty, so check the NWS forecast again Thursday or Friday.
Seasonal context
Mid-October is when Boston’s weather typically starts to swing between mild, sunny days and the first sharply colder air of the fall, and this week’s forecast shows exactly that pattern: highs near 70 early in the week and near 50 by Saturday. We have not quoted normal values here because we could not retrieve them directly at publish time.
