Boston election officials are exploring a new mail-in ballot drop box in Fields Corner after the planned temporary closure of the neighborhood post office, Axios Boston reported on Oct. 15, 2026. Mail-in voting is already underway in Massachusetts, and Boston early voting began Saturday, Oct. 17, and runs through Oct. 30, ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm election.
Axios reported that the city Elections Department is looking at a Fields Corner drop box because the U.S. Postal Service plans a temporary closure of the Fields Corner post office on Oct. 26. The city already operates several drop boxes for mail-in ballots, including three in Dorchester, but none in Fields Corner itself, according to the same report. City officials told Axios they could not say when a new box would be installed, only that they want it available before Election Day.
Why Fields Corner is on the agenda
The temporary Fields Corner post office shutdown has already drawn local political attention. City Councilor Brian FitzGerald started a petition tied to the Oct. 26 closure, as detailed in our earlier coverage of the Fields Corner post office closing and FitzGerald petition. An earlier report tracked the same temporary close date when the Postal Service first set the schedule for the Fields Corner post office Oct. 26 temporary close.
Axios also noted that the Postal Service has announced plans to permanently close its shuttered Allston post office, a separate dispute that has angered Allston-Brighton residents and that Mayor Michelle Wu previously said the city was prepared to challenge. That Allston fight was covered in our report on the Allston post office fight and Wu’s lawsuit comments.
Voting rights groups’ stated concerns
Brooke Simone, a staff attorney at Lawyers for Civil Rights, told Axios that post office closures need to be taken seriously “given the credible threats and the valid concerns regarding federal election interference for the midterms.” Simone said the group plans to monitor election activity, including in Dorchester, for hurdles that could keep people from voting. She also said residents still have alternatives, including USPS collection boxes, early voting sites and Election Day polling places.
Axios reported that civil rights groups in Boston and elsewhere in Massachusetts are also watching for the possibility that immigration agents or armed federal officers could appear at polling places, which the outlet described as a violation of federal law. The Trump administration said it has no plans for immigration officers at the polls after lawsuits filed by advocacy groups, Axios reported. Separately, the Justice Department previously sent election monitors to Boston, New Bedford and Lowell during the state primary, according to a Justice Department announcement cited by Axios.
Mail voting and early voting calendar
Massachusetts voters can already cast mail-in ballots. Boston early voting runs through Oct. 30, 2026, with Election Day on Nov. 3. A federal judge in Boston, Indira Talwani, issued an order blocking a federal executive order that would have overhauled mail-in voting before the midterms; Axios reported that the U.S. Supreme Court left that order in place last month while related cases continue.
City officials have urged residents to make a voting plan, whether they will vote in person or by mail. Drop boxes are one of several options for returning a completed mail ballot without relying solely on a neighborhood post office counter. Until a Fields Corner box is confirmed and located, voters in that part of Dorchester will continue to use existing Dorchester drop boxes, early voting locations or postal service elsewhere.
What remains unsettled
As of the Oct. 15 Axios report, the city had not announced a street address, installation date or hours for a Fields Corner drop box. This article does not treat the box as operational until officials publish those details. Residents looking for official early voting sites and ballot instructions should check the city Elections Department pages on boston.gov and the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s voter information for Nov. 3.
