MOYALE / NAIROBI (Nov. 6, 2026) — U.N. refugee, children’s, migration and food agencies appealed for $8.9 million to cover three months of life-saving aid after roughly 50,000 people fled armed clashes around Ethiopia’s Moyale into Marsabit County, Kenya — a surge agencies say could climb toward 80,000 if fighting continues.

What the appeal funds

UNHCR, UNICEF, IOM and WFP jointly asked for $8.9 million to support up to 50,000 arrivals with food, shelter, water, sanitation, registration and protection, including child protection, Xinhua and UNHCR materials said. Planners are preparing for as many as 80,000 people if cross-border flows keep rising.

OCHA’s Nairobi update described the Ethiopian side of Moyale as volatile, with new arrivals reporting widespread damage to homes. Partners are working with Kenyan authorities to move people away from the immediate border, where protection risks are highest.

How the fighting pushed the border

Clashes between communities in southern Ethiopia — reported as involving Ethiopian Somali and Oromo areas around Moyale — intensified from mid-October. County authorities said about 50,000 people had crossed by Nov. 3, mostly women and children sheltering with host communities or in schools and churches.

AFP reporting carried by Africanews quoted fleeing residents describing daily gunfire, burned houses and missing relatives. The Kenyan Red Cross said stray bullets killed three people on the Kenyan side and wounded 20 — figures that underscore how the fight spills across a town that straddles the frontier.
