BAMAKO, Mali — Malian authorities have still not disclosed the fate or whereabouts of pro-democracy politician Mountaga Tall and his eldest son six months after Tall’s abduction, Amnesty International said on Nov. 3.

Agents of Mali’s National Agency for State Security carried out the enforced disappearances, Amnesty said.

Key facts

  • Mountaga Tall, 69, a lawyer and leader of the National Congress for the Democratic Initiative, was taken from his home on the night of May 3, Amnesty said.
  • His son, Cheick Mamadou Tall, went missing on May 16, Amnesty said.
  • Politicians Youssouf Daba Diawara and Moussa Djiré, also abducted in early May, were charged on Oct. 20, the group said.

What Amnesty asked

Amnesty called on the authorities to allow both men access to family and lawyers and to charge or release them.

“Six months of uncertainty and anguish for their family must end,” said Marceau Sivieude, Amnesty International’s regional director for West and Central Africa.

This report rests on Amnesty International’s statement and has not been independently confirmed. Mali’s authorities have not publicly responded, according to the statement.
