UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations Security Council extended the UN Verification Mission in Colombia for one year, until Oct. 31, 2027, on Oct. 30, the Xinhua news agency reported.
Resolution 2833 kept only the mission’s primary tasks, Xinhua reported. Those are the reincorporation of former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) fighters and security guarantees, the agency reported.
Key facts
- The council voted unanimously, Justice for Colombia reported. Xinhua did not give a vote count.
- The mission will no longer monitor the 2016 peace deal’s chapter on comprehensive rural reform, Justice for Colombia reported.
- The change followed an Oct. 12 request by Colombia’s foreign minister, Omar Bula, the group reported.
- More than 11,000 former FARC fighters have been reincorporated, the group reported.
Council members voice caution
“Denmark believes that effective implementation of rural reform is a key element to foster development,” Denmark’s UN ambassador, Sandra Jensen Landi, said, Justice for Colombia reported.
A British spokesperson said protecting the agreement’s gains and addressing security “are not incompatible,” the group reported.
Colombia’s UN ambassador, Mauricio Gaona, said “the peace agreement is not a model for the world,” the group reported. Former officials of President Gustavo Petro’s government criticized the change, it reported.
Xinhua is China’s state news agency. Justice for Colombia is an advocacy group that opposed the change. Both report the same vote date, end date and narrowed tasks.
