Lundbeck Boston Headquarters: Drugmaker Leaves Illinois

Danish drugmaker Lundbeck will move its U.S. headquarters from Deerfield, Illinois, to Greater Boston and build a global innovation hub in the region, the company announced Friday, Sept. 25, 2026. The Lundbeck Boston headquarters move will unfold over the next year, according to the company’s press release.

The company said the move supports the next phase of what it calls its “Focused Innovator” strategy as it looks to scale its neuroscience portfolio and build its digital and AI capabilities.

Lundbeck Boston Headquarters: What the Company Said

H. Lundbeck A/S said the new hub will build on its existing presence in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and will put its U.S. headquarters “at its center,” in the words of Thomas Gibbs, executive vice president and president of Lundbeck US. The release describes Greater Boston as a place that brings together academic and healthcare institutions, biotechnology companies, scientific talent and a technology and AI ecosystem.

CEO Charl van Zyl said in the release that “our investment in Greater Boston is an important step in positioning Lundbeck to capture those opportunities.” Tarek Samad, the company’s head of R&D, said “Greater Boston offers an exceptional environment for scientific innovation.”

What Hasn’t Been Disclosed

Nordic Life Science, which covered the announcement on Sept. 28, reported that the company did not disclose a specific site, an investment amount or a headcount for the hub. The release itself says only that the transition from Deerfield will take place “over the next year” and that Lundbeck intends to retain its U.S. team and maintain business continuity.

Deerfield Employees and the Illinois Side

The Chicago Business Journal, in a Sept. 28 report (subscriber content; the details here come from the portion visible to us), said Lundbeck US was established in Deerfield in 2009 when the company acquired Ovation Pharmaceuticals. Spokesperson Molly Poarch told the outlet the company has about 120 employees in Illinois and expects a majority of them to continue in their current roles through “remote and hybrid ways of working.”

Lundbeck describes itself as a biopharmaceutical company focused exclusively on brain health, with more than 5,000 employees in more than 20 countries.

Our Take: A Signal, Not Yet a Site

This section is The Boston Report’s analysis and opinion, separate from the sourced reporting above.

Our read is that the announcement is a meaningful vote of confidence in Greater Boston’s life sciences cluster, and it comes as lab space has been an open question: our 2024 coverage of lab development in Boston described large Allston lab projects put on hold amid a surplus of lab space and higher interest rates. Until Lundbeck names a location, size and hiring plans, though, it is hard to say what the move means for local real estate or jobs. Lundbeck’s emphasis on AI is also consistent with the trend we tracked in our guide to major AI companies and organizations in Massachusetts. We will update this story if the company releases specifics.
