Sudan RSF Attack Kills Civilians in Kordofan

A Sudan RSF attack in the Umm Badr area of North Kordofan killed more than 25 civilians, the Sudan Doctors Network said on Oct. 3, 2026, accusing Rapid Support Forces fighters of executing residents on ethnic grounds under claims they sided with the Sudanese army, Anadolu Agency reported.

The nongovernmental medical network said a video circulating online appeared to show RSF members carrying out the killings and called the deaths a grave violation of international humanitarian law. It urged the United Nations and rights groups to open an independent investigation. The RSF did not immediately comment; the group typically denies targeting civilians, a claim disputed by Sudanese authorities and many human rights organizations.

Sudan RSF attack amid North Kordofan shifts

The reported massacre comes as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have advanced across large parts of North Kordofan, announcing control of 11 areas and, since late July, retaking the strategic city of Bara plus Jabra al-Sheikh and Umm Siyala while securing the road linking Bara to Omdurman west of Khartoum. Fighting across North, West and South Kordofan has intensified since late 2025 after the fall of el-Fasher in Darfur redirected the war toward the corridor linking RSF-held west and army-held center.

Al Jazeera, citing ACLED data through Sept. 19, 2026, found Kordofan’s three states recorded 2,876 attacks—about 19.7 percent of all recorded attacks since April 2023—second only to Khartoum when combined. North Kordofan alone logged 1,205 attacks, with Sheikan locality, home to el-Obeid, accounting for 41 percent of that state’s total. Our earlier report on the Sudan Kordofan corridor battle and coverage of how the Sudan army captured Sodari tracked the same corridor fight before Saturday’s civilian toll claim.

UN Security Council sanctions deadline

Diplomatically, the UN Security Council faces a decision on extending the Resolution 1591 Sudan sanctions regime, which was rolled over on Sept. 11 only until Oct. 9 after members deadlocked on a U.S. push to expand the Darfur-centered arms embargo nationwide and explicitly cover drones. Security Council Report said Greece, holding the October presidency, is expected to schedule a vote on renewal and that Russia and China have rejected broadening the embargo while the United States and United Kingdom argue the conflict has moved far beyond Darfur.

A Sept. 3 fact-finding mission report titled “Fuelling Sudan’s conflict” found foreign recruitment and external support networks—including up to 2,000 former Colombian military contractors alongside RSF units—are deepening both sides’ strike capacity, and said repeated RSF drone strikes on El Obeid may amount to war crimes. The World Food Programme has described Sudan as the world’s largest hunger and displacement crisis, with roughly 20 million people in acute hunger and severe underfunding threatening aid cutbacks.

Regional spillover risks

Beyond Kordofan, Blue Nile fighting has escalated since an RSF–SPLM-N alliance recaptured Kurmuk and Geissan in mid-August and pressed toward Ed Damazin, raising cross-border concerns. Mediation tracks involving the Quintet and a Quad that includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the United States remain fractured, including over whether the SAF and RSF should be treated as equivalent parties. Horn of Africa instability also intersects with wider Red Sea and Gulf security debates covered in our Makkah defense pact reporting.

Accountability questions after Umm Badr

If verified, the Umm Badr killings would add to a long list of alleged ethnic-targeted abuses in a war that UN estimates say has killed tens of thousands and displaced around 13 million people. Investigators will need authenticable video forensics, witness accounts and access to the site—conditions rarely available in contested North Kordofan. Council members weighing Oct. 8–9 sanctions language will confront the same evidence gap: how to update tools meant for Darfur when the war’s center of gravity has shifted to Kordofan’s corridor towns and their civilians.
