News Sources Guide: Fact vs. Opinion and Independent News

This news sources guide helps you tell reporting from opinion, find independent and nonprofit journalism worth supporting, and see where popular online creators sit on the political spectrum. It was last reviewed on October 4, 2026, and covers 43 outlets, 28 independent and nonprofit news organizations, journalists and support groups, and 20 creators. It is an orientation guide, not an endorsement of any source.

Last reviewed October 4, 2026. Published by The Boston Report under the editorial direction of Peter Sinclaire, Editor & Publisher. See our Editorial Standards & AI Use Policy and masthead.

  • Wire services and public broadcasters (AP, Reuters, C-SPAN) sit at the “straight news” end of our scale.
  • Magazines and cable channels often mix reporting with opinion, so we show news and opinion pages separately where raters do.
  • Raters disagree. The same outlet can land in different spots at AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC) and Ad Fontes Media.
  • No payment. The Boston Report receives no payment, commission or affiliate compensation from any link on this page.

How we rate: the fact vs. opinion scale and our methodology

We rate each outlet on a simple five-point scale describing the mix of content it is best known for, not whether it is right or wrong:

ScoreLabelWhat it means
1Mostly straight news reportingEvent-driven reporting with attribution; little or no analysis in the main product.
2News with analysisReporting plus labeled analysis, context or explainers.
3Mixed news and opinionSubstantial reporting and substantial opinion or commentary under one brand.
4Mostly opinion-drivenCommentary, essays or opinion-led programming make up most of the output.
5Opinion / advocacyContent is primarily argument for a viewpoint. We use this mainly for opinion sections.

Where a publication has a separate opinion section (for example, a newspaper’s editorial page), we give two scores: one for news and one for opinion pages.

What the ratings are based on

  • AllSides Media Bias Ratings: a political-lean rating (Left, Lean Left, Center, Lean Right, Right) that combines editorial reviews, blind surveys and other methods. AllSides says its ratings generally refer to online news content. Lean labels in our tables come from AllSides.
  • Media Bias/Fact Check (MBFC): gives a bias rating and a separate factual-reporting rating (for example, “High” or “Mixed”).
  • Ad Fontes Media: scores bias and reliability, with a category label such as “Reliable, Analysis/Fact Reporting” that helps us judge the news-versus-opinion mix.
  • Pew Research Center and the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026: research on how Americans and global audiences use news creators.

Ratings reflect our editorial read informed by these raters; they are judgments, not facts. We looked up the current rater pages on October 4, 2026, and cite them in each row. “No rating found” means we did not find a rating from that rater. Several AllSides ratings carry “low confidence,” which AllSides uses for newer or less-reviewed ratings. The Boston Report’s articles are produced with AI assistance and reviewed under editorial direction, as explained in our editorial policy.

Disclaimer. Political lean labels are for orientation only. A “Center” label does not mean better, and a “Left” or “Right” label does not mean inaccurate. Where possible we use a creator’s own description. To report an error or request a change, email stories@thebostonreport.com or see our Corrections Policy.

Independent journalism worth supporting

Independent newsrooms depend on readers. Below are nonprofit and reader-supported outlets and journalists that were publishing as of October 4, 2026; we checked each site for recent posts or an active page. We link to the donate or subscribe page where one exists. “Independent” here means not owned by a large media company; it does not mean neutral.

How to support independent journalism

  • Subscribe or donate to the outlets you read most, even a small monthly amount.
  • Share original reporting with a link to the source, not a screenshot.
  • Find local news through the INN and LION directories above, and consider a local paper or public radio station.
  • Read the funding page of any outlet, including ours, so you know who pays for the reporting.

Social media stars and creators by political lean

About one in five U.S. adults (21%) regularly get news from news influencers, according to the Pew Research Center fact sheet (survey of Aug. 18-24, 2025). The Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report 2026 found that 27% of respondents globally get news from news-focused creators, and that people see creators as more entertaining and relatable but less trustworthy and impartial than traditional outlets. In Pew’s 2024 study of 500 popular news influencers, 27% publicly expressed a right-leaning orientation, 21% left-leaning and 48% had no clear orientation. For more on how online voices shape politics, see our earlier look at citizen journalism and politics on X.

Orientation guide, not endorsement. We describe each creator’s messaging and cite the basis for the category. We list them from Left to Right, and we do not judge anyone’s character or motives. Most creators below produce commentary, which would score 4 or 5 on our scale. “Left,” “Right” and other labels come from the rater or source named in each row; where we found no rating, we say so.

How to read news critically: a 7-point checklist

  1. Check the label. Is it news, analysis, or opinion? Reputable outlets label them.
  2. Find the original source. Look for the document, data, court filing or on-the-record quote behind the claim.
  3. Check who is speaking. Note the author’s role, funding and possible conflicts of interest.
  4. Compare coverage. Read at least two outlets with different leanings on the same story.
  5. Look at the date and context. Old stories and cropped clips circulate as if they were new.
  6. Watch the language. Loaded adjectives and absolute words often signal opinion.
  7. Pause before sharing. Check a fact-checker such as PolitiFact, FactCheck.org or Snopes first. Our post on the information war around breaking news shows why.

What is the difference between news and opinion?

News reporting tells you what happened, using named sources and documents. Analysis explains why it matters. Opinion argues for a position. A story can be accurate and still be opinion, and a news report can contain errors. That is why we score the content mix, not the truth of every claim.

Are news bias ratings objective?

No. AllSides, MBFC and Ad Fontes use different methods, and each publishes its approach. Ratings can change after a new review, and raters sometimes disagree, as in the examples above. Use them as one input, together with your own reading of the stories.

Which news sources are the most reliable?

There is no single answer. Wire services and public broadcasters generally score toward the straight-news end on our scale, and fact-checkers show their sources. Reliability also varies by article, so check the original sources for any story that matters to you.

How can I support independent journalism?

Subscribe, donate or become a member of the outlets in the independent journalism section above, share original reporting, and look up a nonprofit or independent newsroom near you through INN and LION. The Boston Report is not paid for these links.

Are social media creators journalists?

Some are, and many are commentators. Pew found that 77% of the news influencers in its 2024 sample had no current or past affiliation with a news organization. Look for corrections practices, named sources and clear separation of reporting from opinion.
