Harvey Boston Office: Legal AI Firm Plans 40 Local Hires

Legal AI company Harvey is opening a Harvey Boston office this fall and plans to hire at least 40 people, The Boston Globe reported Oct. 1. The San Francisco-based company, which builds AI software for law firms and corporate legal departments, currently has about 10 remote employees in the area and aims to reach roughly 50 within nine months.

Why Harvey Picked Boston

In a company announcement, Harvey said the office will help it work more closely with law firms, in-house legal teams and universities across New England. It named area customers including the law firms Ropes & Gray, Mintz, Foley Hoag and Verrill, as well as in-house legal teams at DraftKings, athenahealth and Toast. Harvey also works with Boston University through its law school program.

Chief Operating Officer Katie Burke is a former HubSpot executive who spent almost 12 years at the company and lived in the Boston area for 17 years. “Proximity to customers matters, but so too does the talent base there,” she told the Globe. In the company post, Burke said Harvey’s chief revenue officer and its vice president of commercial both started their sales careers in Boston.

Harvey Boston Office Location and Hiring Plans

Burke told the Globe that Harvey is still choosing a location and wants to be near the downtown law firms that are already customers. The company says it is hiring in sales, recruiting, legal engineering and customer success. Its current Boston staff work in legal innovation, marketing, people operations, commercial legal, customer success and sales.

The Globe reported that Harvey recently raised $550 million at a valuation of almost $16 billion. The company has about 1,500 employees and roughly $400 million in revenue. Burke also credited the region’s AI push, including the private sector-backed Massachusetts AI Coalition: “That brand awareness is helpful because it makes it a whole lot easier for companies like ours to get excited about planting a flag in Boston.”

Boston’s Growing AI Office Cluster

Harvey joins other AI companies that have opened Boston-area outposts over the past year, including Anthropic and the Swedish coding startup Lovable, according to the Globe. The announcement follows other recent corporate moves into the city, such as Lundbeck’s Boston headquarters relocation. It also comes as City Hall promotes AI skills in schools through the Wu AI fluency initiative, and as federal regulators examine the sector, as in the FTC probe of OpenAI and Anthropic.

The legal industry’s experience with AI has been mixed. The Globe noted high-profile cases of lawyers filing AI-drafted briefs that contained invented court citations. Burke said Harvey’s software includes guardrails meant to keep it to factual information.

Our Take: What a 40-Person Office Signals

The following is analysis by The Boston Report and is separate from the sourced reporting above.

Forty to fifty jobs will not change the downtown office market by itself, but where Harvey chooses to locate matters. A company built to serve Big Law choosing space near Boston’s legal district is a small vote of confidence in the Financial District at a time when many downtown landlords are converting older office buildings to housing. Harvey’s local customer list also shows that Boston’s buyers of legal AI are its established law firms and its home-grown tech and health companies, which is a market a sales-focused office can reach quickly. The open question is whether these AI outposts grow into engineering hubs or remain mostly sales and customer-support teams. The answer will shape how much of the next wave of AI spending stays in Boston.
