“Street Fighter” punched its way to No. 1 at the North American box office over the Oct. 16-18, 2026, weekend with an estimated $31 million, but the bigger story was in second place. A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” took in $15 million from just 855 theaters, the strongest start for a documentary in more than two decades. The Street Fighter box office debut came in a bit under the studio’s own projection.

Weekend box office top 5 (estimates, Oct. 16-18)
- “Street Fighter” (Paramount): $31 million from 3,575 theaters, new.
- “You Can See Everything” (A24): $15 million from 855 theaters, new.
- “Other Mommy” (Universal): $8.35 million, down about 70% in its second weekend, for a total of about $44.9 million.
- “Whalefall” (20th Century Studios): $8 million from 3,065 theaters, new.
- “Sense and Sensibility” (Focus Features): $7.25 million from 2,545 theaters, new.
Figures are weekend estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo and may be revised. The Hollywood Reporter put the weekend’s total domestic gross at about $101.6 million, roughly 45% above the same weekend in 2025.
‘Street Fighter’ wins, with mixed reviews
Directed by Kitao Sakurai and produced by Legendary Entertainment, “Street Fighter” adapts Capcom’s long-running video game series. Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji star as estranged fighters in the 1990s who are recruited into a tournament that pits them against each other, Variety reported. It is the first release under Paramount’s distribution deal with Legendary.
Paramount had expected an opening in the mid-$30 millions, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which said the film carries an $82 million budget. It added $20.1 million from 65 international markets. Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, the same grade as the 1994 “Street Fighter” starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Critics have been cooler, with a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of THR’s report, compared with a 79% audience score.
The franchise has had an uneven run in theaters. Variety noted that the 1994 film earned about $100 million, while 2009’s “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” made $12.8 million against a $50 million budget.
Why ‘You Can See Everything’ is the weekend’s breakout
Made in secret over more than three years by comedian Nathan Fielder and “Primetime” filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, “You Can See Everything” follows Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the period before she began her prison sentence for defrauding investors. The three-hour film averaged about $17,544 per theater, more than double the per-theater average of “Street Fighter.”
The Hollywood Reporter said it was the biggest opening for a film playing in fewer than 1,000 locations since “Borat” in 2006 and the biggest documentary debut since Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” in 2004. It easily passed this year’s “Melania,” which opened to $7.1 million. Early estimates had pointed to a $7 million to $8 million weekend, Variety reported.
THR reported more than 2,000 sellout screenings nationwide, an audience that was 70% under age 35, a 99% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 4.8 rating on Letterboxd, the highest the site has recorded. A24 plans to add theaters next weekend.
Whalefall and Sense and Sensibility
Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ “Whalefall,” Brian Duffield’s survival thriller about a scuba diver swallowed by a sperm whale, opened to $8 million, below the studio’s projection in the low double digits, against a reported $60 million budget. Focus Features’ new “Sense and Sensibility,” starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as the Dashwood sisters, opened to about $7.25 million on a budget in the mid-$20 millions and earned an A- CinemaScore, THR reported.
Further down the chart, Tom Cruise’s “Digger” slipped to about $17.2 million in total after three weekends, following the soft start we covered in our Digger opening-weekend report. Netflix also released Oscar contender “La bola negra” in four theaters and, for the first time, publicly reported a box office figure: a $69,375 per-screen average.
What’s next at the box office
New releases next weekend include “Clayface,” “Wildwood,” “Klara and the Sun,” “Ali G: Who Iz I?” and “Wicker,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The year’s domestic total stands at about $8.2 billion, ahead of 2025’s $6.8 billion at this point but still behind 2019’s $8.9 billion, the outlet said.
