Boston holiday parking follows one basic rule: on City of Boston holidays, parking meters are free with no time limit, just as they are on Sundays, but every other posted parking rule is still enforced. Street cleaning, trash pickup and city services each follow their own holiday rules, and a few holidays break the pattern. This guide pulls the city’s own 2026 holiday list, street-sweeping rules and meter rules into one place so you can answer the question “is parking free in Boston today?” before you leave the car.
Is parking free in Boston today?
According to the city’s Parking Clerk, you can park at a meter for free on Sundays and City holidays, but “all other parking regulations are still enforced.” On regular days, most meters operate Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and at most meters you can stay only two hours before moving to another block. Hours and limits vary, so the posted meter and signs are what count.
Free does not mean anything goes. On a holiday you can still be ticketed or towed for parking in a resident-permit-only zone without a sticker, blocking a hydrant or crosswalk, using a loading or tow zone, or parking where overnight street cleaning is posted. If a date is unclear, the city tells drivers to contact BOS:311, which can confirm whether meters are free that day.
When a holiday falls on a weekend and the city observes it on a weekday, meters can be free on both days. The Parking Clerk gives the example of Christmas 2016, which fell on a Sunday: city offices closed the following Monday, and meters were free with no time limit on both days. July 4, 2026, worked differently. The city observed Independence Day on Friday, July 3, but noted that meters were free on Saturday, July 4, and not on the Friday.
Boston holiday parking calendar for the rest of 2026
These are the remaining 2026 dates on the city’s official holiday list, with what changes on each:
| Date | Holiday | Meters | Street cleaning | Trash and recycling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wed., Nov. 11, 2026 | Veterans Day | Free, no time limit | Daytime canceled; overnight normal | Delayed in some neighborhoods |
| Thu., Nov. 26, 2026 | Thanksgiving Day | Free, no time limit | Daytime canceled; overnight normal | Delayed in some neighborhoods |
| Fri., Dec. 25, 2026 | Christmas Day | Free, no time limit | Daytime canceled; overnight normal | Delayed in some neighborhoods |
City offices and BCYF community centers close on all three days. Boston Public Library branches close on Thanksgiving and Christmas; for Veterans Day, check the city holiday page for library hours. Note that daytime street cleaning in most neighborhoods ends for the season on Nov. 30, so Christmas matters for street cleaning mainly in the North End, South End and Beacon Hill, where it runs through December.
Boston parking holidays in 2027
As of Nov. 1, 2026, the city’s holiday page lists dates only through Christmas 2026; it typically adds the next year’s list later. In 2026, the city treated these as holidays with free meters: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Evacuation Day, Patriots Day, Memorial Day, Bunker Hill Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Juneteenth was handled differently, with “Sunday parking rules” in effect. Check the city’s page before relying on any 2027 date.
Does Boston street cleaning happen on holidays?
Usually only at night. On most City holidays in 2026, daytime street cleaning was canceled while overnight cleaning stayed on its normal schedule. Two Boston-specific holidays are the exception: on Evacuation Day (March 17) and Bunker Hill Day (June 17), meters are free but street cleaning and trash pickup run normally. City offices stay open on Evacuation Day, so drivers who see free meters can easily assume the sweeper isn’t coming. It is.
The Public Works Department adds a few rules that also apply on holiday weeks:
- Season: daytime cleaning runs April 1 to Nov. 30 in most neighborhoods. In the North End, South End and Beacon Hill it continues to Dec. 31 and restarts March 1.
- Nighttime cleaning covers main roads, arterials and commercial streets all year. If a posted sweeping sign lists no months, the restriction is in force year-round.
- Fifth week: streets swept every week are also swept in the fifth week of a month; streets swept every other week are not.
- Rain: the city does not always cancel sweeping for rain, and says light rain can help.
You can look up your street’s schedule and sign up for No-Tow email reminders through the city’s street-sweeping lookup, linked from the Street Cleaning in Boston page. For a neighborhood example, see our South Boston street cleaning guide.
If you get a ticket or towed on a holiday
Street-sweeping tickets come from the Boston Transportation Department, and private companies working for the city do the towing. The city’s street cleaning page says the state’s maximum rate for police-ordered or involuntary towing is currently $132, plus $35 per 24 hours of storage for non-commercial vehicles, with extra charges possible if more labor is needed. To find out which company towed your car, use the city’s towed-car lookup or call Boston Police. For fines, payment deadlines and how to contest a ticket, see our Boston parking tickets guide.
Trash pickup and city services on holidays
For most City holidays, the city says trash and recycling pickups are delayed in some neighborhoods during the holiday week, and points residents to the Trash Day app to check their own schedule. Evacuation Day and Bunker Hill Day pickups run on a normal schedule. Our Boston trash, recycling and leaf pickup schedule covers the full year, and residents in permit zones can check our Boston resident parking permit guide. When snow is in the forecast, holiday rules don’t override a declared snow emergency; see our Boston snow emergency and parking ban page.
