Worcester’s parking ban season begins Dec. 1, when the city’s permanent winter parking ban returns on main roads, and declared bans can be called on every other street whenever accumulating snow is forecast. Last winter the rules were enforced hard: during the late-January 2026 storm, Worcester police issued about 720 tickets and towed 400 cars. This guide explains the two kinds of bans, which side of the street you can use, where to park for free and how to get alerts.
Permanent vs. declared Worcester parking ban
The city splits its winter rules into two categories:
- Permanent ban: in effect from Dec. 1 through April 30 on emergency arteries, Worcester Regional Transit Authority bus routes and other streets critical to traffic flow. Parking is barred on one or both sides of these streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. every night, and at any hour once a snow emergency is declared. The city’s November 2025 notice said the ban ran to April 30 on those roads and to April 1 for residential streets.
- Declared ban: applies to all remaining streets and is switched on when accumulating snow is forecast. It is not tied to a calendar date, so it can be called for any storm.
Some streets are split into sections with different ban types, so the same road can follow different rules block by block.
Which side of the street to park on
During a declared ban, parking is prohibited on both sides of main arteries, emergency and bus routes, and downtown streets important to traffic. On all other streets, the city allows parking only on the odd-numbered side unless signs say otherwise.
To check a specific address, the city offers an online winter parking map at worcesterma.gov/streets/winter-weather/winter-parking. The map shows which ban covers each street and points drivers to nearby streets with better options when they have to move. Worcester 311 can answer the same question by phone.
Free garage parking during a ban
Worcester’s five municipal garages are free while a declared ban is in effect:
- Union Station Garage, 225 Franklin St.
- Major Taylor Garage, 30 Major Taylor Blvd.
- Federal Plaza Garage, 570 Main St.
- Pearl-Elm Garage, 20 Pearl St.
- Worcester Common Garage, 3 Eaton Place
One catch: special event rates still apply to cars that enter during events. During a February 2026 ban, the city posted garage-by-garage windows when entry was free, and cars already parked were not charged the event rate. Garages remain free until the city announces otherwise after the ban is lifted.
Worcester parking ban alerts and enforcement
The city calls Worcester 311 the official source on whether a ban is in effect. Residents can sign up for ALERTWorcester texts, calls and emails at worcesterma.gov/alertworcester, and updates also go out on the city website, the government cable channel and social media. Note that ALERTWorcester was out of service during the February 2026 storm, so it is worth checking a second source when snow is coming.
Cars that violate a ban or block plows are ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense. To find a towed car, call Worcester 311. City officials named parked cars, along with residents shoveling snow into the street, as the biggest obstacles to clearing roads in January.
