Global Arts Live scheduled the public opening of The Platform, a 45,000-square-foot performing arts center in Kendall Square, for Saturday, Nov. 7, WBUR reported. The Cambridge venue is the nonprofit’s first permanent home in its 36-year history, according to The Boston Globe.

What is inside
The Platform occupies the first three floors of the 585 Kendall building, developed by BioMed Realty, the Globe reported. Global Arts Live lists the address as 315 Kendall St.
The first-floor Tempo Stage has 125 seats and accordion windows that can open in warm months, according to the Globe. The upstairs Takeda Theater has 404 seats and a stage large enough for an 80-piece orchestra, the Globe reported.
The building also has two bars, a cafe and a rehearsal studio, WBUR reported. Takeda, the project’s lead sponsor, will occupy the floors above the arts center, according to WBUR.
“It’s purposely designed at 400 seats because that is called a midsized theater, and midsize theaters have been lacking in Boston,” founder Maure Aronson told WBUR.
A nonprofit that never had a stage of its own
Aronson founded the organization as World Music in 1990, WBUR reported. It has booked performers from more than 110 countries at venues including the Somerville Theatre, Berklee Performance Center and Sanders Theatre, the Globe reported.
BioMed Realty began talks with Global Arts Live in late 2020 about operating a theater inside its biotech research building, WBUR reported.
“What does it mean to have a home base? It’s something that we never dreamed of,” Aronson told the Globe. He said the group will keep booking its usual outside venues.
Opening weekend and the schedule ahead
The free opening day was set for noon to 4 p.m. on Nov. 7, according to Global Arts Live and BroadwayWorld. The vertical dance company BANDALOOP was scheduled to perform on the building’s exterior at 12:30 and 3 p.m., BroadwayWorld reported.
Malian drummer Sidy Maiga and Gamelan Galak Tika were also on the opening-day bill, the Globe reported. Compagnie Hervé Koubi was scheduled to give the Boston premiere of “Sol Invictus” at the Takeda Theater that evening, according to the Globe.
Acts booked for the following days include guitarist Peppino D’Agostino on Nov. 10 and bandura player Maryna Krut on Nov. 11, Global Arts Live’s calendar showed. Jean Appolon Expressions is scheduled for Nov. 13-14, the Globe reported.
Rooms for local artists
Global Arts Live plans about 100 nights of its own programming each year, WBUR reported. Roughly 200 more nights will go to artists and arts groups at subsidized rental rates, according to WBUR. The organization will also offer 25 free rental nights a year, CEO Connie C. Chin said.
Chin told the Globe the group is underwriting the rental rates to keep them as low as possible. The Globe noted the opening comes shortly after the Lizard Lounge, another Cambridge venue, announced it will close in May 2027.
What happens next
Kendall Square is known for life sciences and not nightlife, and drawing audiences there will be a challenge, the Globe reported. For more local arts coverage, see the Entertainment and Music sections, and things to do in Boston this weekend.
