European officials will take part in U.S.-mediated talks on ending the war in Ukraine in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10 and 11, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Sunday, France 24 reported. “France will be there and will ensure that Europe’s voice is heard,” Barrot told RTL radio, the Associated Press reported.
A change in format
The talks had been presented as a trilateral meeting of officials from the United States, Russia and Ukraine, France 24 and the AP reported. Barrot did not say who would represent France or whether European officials would join negotiations directly, the AP reported. The identities of participants have not been made public, France 24 reported.
Zelenskyy wants European involvement, and Russia has suggested there would be no place for European representatives at the table, France 24 reported.
Brussels meeting
U.S., European, Ukrainian and NATO officials met in Brussels on Thursday ahead of the talks, France 24 reported. Jared Kushner, the U.S. president’s envoy, joined by video link and said Washington would “consult closely with our European partners on the sidelines” in Abu Dhabi, France 24 reported.
President Donald Trump predicted a “very big” deal with Russia extending beyond Ukraine to “all of Europe,” raising concern that Europe might be sidelined, the AP reported.
