BEIJING — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow co-chaired the 11th Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Beijing on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Thailand’s foreign ministry said.

The six member countries took stock of a decade of cooperation, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press conference on Nov. 5.

Key facts

  • Wang put forward five proposals, including the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and an “LMC Economic Development Belt,” Guo said.
  • Wang also called for a cross-border disaster-warning mechanism and joint work against cross-border crime, Guo said.
  • Thailand proposed a task force of central banks, law enforcement, regulators and private companies to fight online scams and financial fraud, its foreign ministry said.
  • Thailand said it is ready to co-host the 5th Mekong-Lancang Leaders’ Meeting in Guilin later this year.

Each side’s priorities

Wang urged the group to reject “external interference and bloc confrontation,” Guo said.

Thailand called for cooperation on water management, water quality, transboundary pollution and transboundary crime, its foreign ministry said.

The Thai task force proposal builds on the “Bangkok Blueprint for Fraud-Resilient Financial Services,” the ministry said.

Neither government published a list of documents adopted or funding figures.
