Harry Hare’s Beacon Hill, a British-style pub from veteran Boston restaurateur Patrick Lyons, is expected to open in mid-November in the former Beacon Hill Pub space at 147 Charles St., Boston.com reported on Nov. 3. As of Nov. 7, the pub’s official website still said “Opening 2026” and promised to post the address, parking details and nearest T stop before opening. No exact date has been announced.

From neighborhood dive to English alehouse

The Beacon Hill Pub was a no-frills neighborhood barroom that officially closed in 2022, The Boston Globe reported in July. Lyons told a city licensing board that he wanted to replace the bar’s rough reputation with a quieter, polished dining room modeled on traditional English alehouses. He is naming the pub after his late father-in-law, who loved English alehouses, according to the Globe.

Lyons has helped develop and run more than 20 concepts, the Globe said. The Lyons Group’s portfolio includes Alibi Bar & Lounge and Scampo at The Liberty Hotel, Sonsie, Back Bay Social, and Fenway bars such as Lansdowne Pub and Bleacher Bar. The Globe reported that developer Ty Gupta bought the building and liquor license in a 2021 deal valued at $8.3 million, and that Lyons is buying the license from Gupta.

What the menu is expected to include

The Globe said chef Bill Poirier, formerly executive chef at Sonsie, developed the menu as a consultant, mixing British pub staples with the Indian dishes that have become part of British food culture. The pub’s website lists a sample of the dinner menu: half a dozen Duxbury oysters, a Scotch egg with Cumberland sausage, steak and bone marrow pot pie, heritage chicken pot pie, London-style chicken tikka masala, smoked trout Caesar, fish and chips, and steak and anchovy tartare. Sticky toffee pudding is listed among the desserts.

Boston.com said the pot pie menu will include chicken, steak, lentil and duck, along with London-style curries with charred naan, mussels steamed in La Chouffe Belgian ale, and British ales and beers on tap. The website promises cask ale, a short cocktail list and wine by the glass. Prices have not been posted. The website notes that its food photos are generated concept images, not dishes as served.

Storefront approval

The Beacon Hill Architectural Commission approved a new storefront for 147–149 Charles St. at its Sept. 17 hearing, the Beacon Hill Times reported. Plans include a carved wood sign, operable windows, cedar window boxes, a granite base and a menu display by the door, with conditions on window details. The website describes rooms with rich woodwork, antique furniture and a marble bar.

A busy year for British and Irish pubs

Harry Hare’s is one of several pub-style openings this fall. Eater Boston’s fall preview grouped it with other English and Irish concepts, and Boston.com’s November list also included Session House, an Irish pub coming to Dorchester’s Adams Village. On Charles Street, the pub joins a strip where we have recently covered the Mooo steakhouse and, nearby on Beacon Street, the Cheers bar. The Charles/MGH stop on the Red Line sits at the foot of Charles Street.

The Boston Report will update this preview when Harry Hare’s announces its opening date, hours and prices.
