Mooo…. Beacon Hill, the steakhouse inside the XV Beacon hotel at 15 Beacon Street, is one of the best-known places in Boston for a prime steak, a business lunch or a celebration dinner a block from the Massachusetts State House. Here is what Mooo Beacon Hill Boston serves, what the October 2026 menu costs, when it is open and how to plan a visit.
A Beacon Hill steakhouse inside a 1903 landmark
Columbus Hospitality Group started the Mooo…. brand in July 2007, according to the restaurant’s own fact sheet, opening the first location at XV Beacon. Chef and owner Jamie Mammano runs the kitchen concept, and developer Paul Roiff, who turned the building into a hotel in 2000, is a co-owner. The space was originally home to the hotel’s earlier restaurant, The Federalist, which Columbus Hospitality Group says “is now Mooo.”
The building itself carries plenty of Boston history. XV Beacon’s history page says the Beaux-Arts structure was designed by architect William Gibbons Preston, with two cast-iron lower stories decorated with gilded shields. Before it became XV Beacon, it housed the Boston Transit Commission, which built the country’s first subway, and later the Boston School Committee, which used it from 1923 to 1999. The same team also runs Mistral in the South End, Sorellina and Ostra.
The Mooo…. name has since spread. A Seaport location opened at 49 Melcher Street in Fort Point and a third opened on Cambridge Street in Burlington, both in 2022 and both serving dinner only. Readers north of the city can find the Burlington branch in our Burlington, MA restaurants guide. Beacon Hill remains the original, and it is the only one of the three that serves breakfast and lunch every day.
Mooo Beacon Hill menu highlights and prices
The dinner menu leans on classic American steakhouse cuts from named farms, served with maître d’hôtel butter, plus a short list of sauces and shareable sides. Prices below come from the menu posted on the restaurant’s website in October 2026 and can change:
- Filet mignon: $72 for an all-natural 8-ounce Nebraska cut.
- Prime New York sirloin: $72 for 12 ounces from Kansas, also offered au poivre.
- American Wagyu cap: $125 for a 10-ounce Snake River Farms steak from Idaho.
- Tenderloin of beef Wellington: $87, with foie gras, spinach and mushroom duxelles.
- Australian lamb chops: $77, with cracked mustard, peppercorn and mint jelly.
- Roasted Cornish game hen: $39, one of the lower-priced entrées.
- Starters: steak tartare smoked to order with bone marrow toast ($32) and Maine lobster bisque with a splash of cognac ($27).
The menu also lists bigger splurges without posted prices, including a 6-ounce A5 Japanese Wagyu sirloin from Kagoshima Prefecture, a 30-day dry-aged 24-ounce Creekstone Farms porterhouse and a 60-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye. Sides run from truffled Parmesan fries and creamed spinach to Maine lobster mac and cheese and fontina “tater tots” with truffle aioli. For dessert, the kitchen offers Valrhona chocolate cake, crème brûlée, bananas Foster and baked-to-order chocolate chip cookies with milk.
Breakfast and lunch cost less. A continental basket of four pastries with juice, coffee or tea is $25, blueberry, banana or chocolate chip pancakes are $22, and the kale and spinach bowl with egg whites and quinoa is $27. OpenTable’s copy of the menu lists steak and eggs, made with a 7-ounce prime sirloin, at $47. Lunch adds salads, a 10-ounce Snake River Farms Wagyu burger, a prime brisket French dip and a Caesar salad with chicken for $30. One detail worth knowing before you order: the restaurant’s menu page says a 20% gratuity is added to all breakfast and lunch checks unless otherwise specified.
Atmosphere, wine cellar and private dining
Mooo…. is smaller than many downtown steakhouses. The fact sheet lists 65 seats in the dining room and 16 at the bar, and describes the style as a modern steakhouse with a relaxed but polished feel. The dress code is business casual. On OpenTable, where the restaurant is listed in the $31 to $50 price band, diners tag it as good for special occasions and fine wine. For comparison with a bigger, louder room, see our guide to Grill 23 in Back Bay.
Wine is a major draw. XV Beacon says the subterranean Wine Cellar holds about 750 selections and 4,000 bottles. That room hosts private events for up to 50 seated guests or 65 for a reception, at breakfast, lunch or dinner, and the hotel’s Parlor Suites can take groups of up to 12. Hotel guests can also order from the Mooo…. menu through in-room dining around the clock.
Hours, reservations and parking
The restaurant’s Beacon Hill page lists these hours, though its fact sheet gives slightly later Friday and Saturday closing times, so check when you book:
- Breakfast: daily, 7 to 10:30 a.m.
- Lunch: daily, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with brunch dishes added on Sundays.
- Dinner: Monday to Thursday 5:30 to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m.; Sunday 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by phone at 617-670-2515 or online. For Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026, the Mooo…. website says the Beacon Hill location will serve from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no takeout that day. On a normal day, takeout is available until 6:30 p.m.
Mooo…. does not offer car service. The fact sheet points drivers to the VPNE lot next door, where the day rate can reach $36 and drops to $15 after 5 p.m., as well as garages at One Beacon and under Boston Common. Park Street station on the Red and Green lines is a short walk away.
Is Mooo Beacon Hill worth it?
For a classic Boston steak dinner with serious wine and a quieter, more intimate room, Mooo…. Beacon Hill is a strong pick, though with most steaks above $70 it is a splurge. Breakfast or lunch is the budget-friendly way to try it. If you are spending the day around the State House and Boston Common, pair it with a pint at Cheers on Beacon Street or brunch another morning at The Paramount on Charles Street.
