CHICAGO — IBM unveiled its first quantum computer in Illinois on Friday, Nov. 6, an IBM Quantum System Two now online at Hyde Park Labs, a University of Chicago-affiliated tech hub, Block Club Chicago reported. Gov. JB Pritzker called it “a major milestone” in the state’s push to lead in quantum computing.

Where it goes

The machine will stay at Hyde Park Labs temporarily, then move to the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park in South Chicago when that development is complete, Block Club reported.

What it will do

It will power the National Quantum Algorithm Center, a place to develop algorithms and applications that scientists and companies without quantum expertise can use. Current projects involve drug discovery, power grid efficiency and high-energy physics, with partners including Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Fermilab, Deloitte and AbbVie, officials said.

Jobs

IBM said earlier this year that its FutureNow Chicago hub at the South Side park will create 750 full-time jobs, and 250 have been hired so far, Pritzker said this week, according to Block Club.
