MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A group of rights holders to Elvis Presley’s music and the publisher of some of Eminem’s biggest records are suing AI music company Suno, claiming it illegally generates music and lyrics that mimic those artists, The Verge reported on Sunday, Nov. 8. The claims are allegations and have not been decided by a court.

What the lawsuits claim

Lawyers in the Presley suit say Suno violated Tennessee’s Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security Act, known as the ELVIS Act, which makes it illegal for an AI company to clone a singer’s voice, according to The Verge. The complaint describes Suno’s business as a “consistent conveyor belt of cold hard cash.”

The Verge said the new cases closely mirror a suit filed in September by Jason Isbell and others, which claimed Suno created imitations of the plaintiffs but did not directly claim copyright infringement.

What Suno says

Suno spokesperson Cat McCormack told The Verge the company exists to help people make new, original music and prohibits unauthorized use of an artist’s work. McCormack said Suno does not allow prompts for specific artists’ names and songs, uses third-party providers to screen uploaded audio and lyrics, and will keep adding safeguards.

A growing pile of cases

Suno already faces suits from Sony, UMG, Isbell, Reservoir Media and others, The Verge reported.

What happens next

Suno’s formal response in court will be the next step to watch, along with whether a judge lets the ELVIS Act claim proceed. See also our Technology coverage.
