Boston city services change three times between now and spring: daytime street cleaning ends in most neighborhoods on Nov. 30, snow emergency rules take over when storms hit, and holiday weeks shift trash and recycling pickups. This 2026-27 season guide collects the City of Boston’s official rules and dates for street cleaning, snow emergencies and parking bans, and trash and recycling holiday schedules in one place, with links to the city tools that show your exact address.

The guide is built to be updated each season. Dates below come from Boston Public Works, Boston 311 and the Boston Transportation Department pages listed in the Sources section, checked on Oct. 22, 2026.

Boston street cleaning season: key dates for 2026-27

Daytime neighborhood street cleaning runs from April 1 through Nov. 30 in every neighborhood except three. The North End, South End and Beacon Hill have a longer season, March 1 through Dec. 31. In most of the city, that means the last posted daytime sweep of 2026 happens before Dec. 1, and the program returns on April 1, 2027.

Main roads, arterials and commercial streets are different. The city’s overnight street cleaning program covers them all year, and a posted sweeping sign that shows no months means the restriction applies year-round. Always follow the sign on your block if it differs from a website or reminder email.

  • Find your schedule: search your address on boston.gov or at notify.boston.gov, where you can also sign up for an email reminder the day before your street is cleaned.
  • Fifth week: streets swept every week are also swept in the fifth week of a month; streets swept every other week usually are not, unless the sign says so.
  • Holidays: daytime street cleaning is canceled on city holidays, while overnight cleaning on main roads can continue.
  • Towing: cars left in a posted zone can be ticketed and towed. The city lists state maximums of $132 for the tow and $35 for each 24 hours of storage, plus a fuel surcharge. Find a towed car with the city’s online tow lookup or the Boston Police tow line, 617-343-4629.

Boston snow emergency and parking ban rules

The mayor declares a snow emergency storm by storm. Once one is declared, parking is banned on posted snow emergency arteries, and cars left there are ticketed and towed. The street sign is the official notice, and the city also publishes a parking restrictions map on its “What to do with your car when it snows” page. Sign up for city alerts through notify.boston.gov to hear when an emergency starts and ends.

  • Discounted garages: participating lots and garages open to eligible residents two hours before a declared emergency. Cars must leave within two hours after the city lifts it, or the garage’s standard rate applies. Eligibility differs by garage, and most require a resident parking sticker or proof of residency.
  • Space savers: allowed only during a declared snow emergency, and they must be removed within 48 hours after it ends. They are banned at all times in the South End and Bay Village.
  • Sidewalks: property owners must clear sidewalks and curb ramps within three hours after snow stops, or three hours after sunrise for overnight snow, with a path at least 42 inches wide. The city’s posted fines are $50 for residential buildings of 16 or fewer units, $100 for larger residential buildings and $200 for commercial properties, with each day counting separately.

Trash and recycling holiday schedule, 2026-27

Boston does not publish a single citywide holiday delay rule. Instead, the city says pickups are delayed in some neighborhoods during a holiday week, and it tells residents to check their own address in the free Trash Day app or the Waste Collection Schedule and Search tool on boston.gov. The app also sends schedule-change alerts.

City holidays in the 2026-27 season that can affect collection and daytime street cleaning include:

Holiday Date
Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026
Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026
Christmas Day Friday, Dec. 25, 2026
New Year’s Day Friday, Jan. 1, 2027
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Monday, Jan. 18, 2027
Presidents’ Day Monday, Feb. 15, 2027
Patriots’ Day Monday, April 19, 2027

Confirm each date against the city’s official holiday list before you plan around it, because Boston posts the specific service changes for each holiday as it approaches.

Seasonal pickups: leaves and Christmas trees

Curbside leaf and yard waste collection runs only in scheduled weeks, and the last 2026 week is Nov. 30 to Dec. 4. Use large paper bags or a barrel with a city yard waste sticker; plastic bags are not collected. Christmas trees go out on your normal trash day during the two weeks after Christmas, which the city calendar lists as Dec. 28, 2026, through Jan. 8, 2027. Trees must be bare, with no lights, ornaments or plastic bags. Details are in our Boston leaf pickup and holiday trash guide.

Everyday rules that apply all season

Trash and recycling may go to the curb no earlier than 5 p.m. the night before pickup and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day; the city lists a $25 fine for early set-out. Trash belongs in a barrel with a secure lid, and recycling goes loose in the blue cart. In winter, clear snow away from carts so crews can reach them, and keep cars at least 20 feet from intersections so plows can turn.
