Burlington’s overnight winter parking ban returns on Dec. 1, 2026, and runs through April 1, 2027, banning street parking from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. The town’s 2026-27 trash calendar also sets this season’s holiday delays, its last fall yard waste weeks and a single Christmas tree pickup week in January. This guide collects the Town of Burlington’s official rules and dates for winter parking and snow plowing, street sweeping, and trash and recycling holiday schedules.

Burlington works differently from nearby cities. It has no resident street-cleaning sign program and no storm-by-storm snow emergency parking declaration like Boston’s or Somerville’s. Instead, a seasonal overnight ban applies every night all winter. Details below come from Town of Burlington documents in the Sources section, checked on Oct. 22, 2026.

Burlington winter parking ban: Dec. 1 to April 1

The town’s general bylaw, Article XIII, Section 1.12, states that no one may leave a vehicle “parked or unattended upon a street between the hours of 2:00 AM and 8:00 AM from December 1 through April 1 in each year.” The rule applies every night in that window, whether or not it is snowing.

  • Enforcement: Burlington Police enforce the ban. Police logs from December 2025 show officers issuing winter parking ban warnings and citations across residential streets in the first days of the season.
  • Fines and towing: Burlington Access Television (BCAT), the town’s local access station, has reported an initial fine of $25 and $50 for later offenses, and that the town may tow cars that interfere with snow removal at the owner’s expense. Check the current amount on any ticket you receive.
  • Plan ahead: households with more cars than driveway spaces need an off-street option for the full four months, not just storm nights.

How Burlington plows snow

The Department of Public Works Highway Division handles winter storms. Depending on the forecast, crews may pre-treat major hills and roads with salt so snow does not bond to the pavement, and sanding continues through a storm.

  • When plowing starts: town plows begin on major roads after about 2 inches of snow. Private plow contractors start on secondary and minor roads after about 3 inches.
  • Order: major roads first, then secondary roads, then minor roads and dead ends. The goal during a storm is to keep roads passable for emergency vehicles; widening and cul-de-sacs come later.
  • How long: the town says it takes 8 to 9 hours after snow stops to finish plowing, and sidewalks are done after the roads. The last pass pushes back road edges, which can put snow in driveways that were already cleared.
  • What residents should do: keep fences, mailboxes, basketball hoops and ramps away from the edge of the right-of-way, avoid parking on the road and limit travel. Shoveling, plowing or blowing snow back into the road is illegal.

Burlington residents can pick up sand at the Highway Division yard, 1 Great Meadow Road. Highway questions go to 781-270-1676 or 781-270-1677.

Street sweeping in Burlington

Under the DPW’s standard operating procedures, street sweeping takes place mainly from April through November, and every street with curbing or catch basins is swept at least once a year in the spring, after winter sanding. Priority roads and town parking lots are swept more often. Sweeping does not happen during rain or snow. The street list and schedule are kept at the DPW facility on Meadow Road, so residents with questions should call DPW at 781-270-1670 rather than look for posted signs.

Burlington trash and recycling holiday schedule, 2026-27

Republic Services collects trash and single-stream recycling every Thursday. In a holiday week, collection is delayed one day and picked up on Friday. The town’s 2026-27 calendar, covering July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, marks delay weeks for Labor Day week in September 2026, Thanksgiving week in November 2026 (with Thursday, Nov. 26, pickup moving to Friday, Nov. 27) and one week in June 2027. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on Fridays this season, and the calendar shows no delay for those weeks.

Yard waste weeks remaining

  • Fall 2026: Oct. 19 through Dec. 4
  • Spring 2027: April 19 through May 28
  • Early summer 2027: June 21 to June 25

Set containers out by 7 a.m. Monday of each collection week; Republic has the full week to finish, and heavy seasons can take up to two weeks per zone. Leaves, grass and twigs are accepted, but not dirt, sod, rocks or treated wood. Branches can be up to 4 inches thick, tied in bundles no more than 30 inches wide and 3 feet long. Bags, barrels and bundles may not exceed 50 pounds, and plastic bags are not accepted.

Christmas tree pickup: one week only

Trees are collected during a single week starting Monday, Jan. 11, 2027. Put the tree at the curb by 7 a.m. that Monday, free of decorations and stands and not in a bag. Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut in half. If a tree is missed, call DPW at 781-270-1670 on Monday, Jan. 18, 2027.
