PARIS (Nov. 6, 2026) — France Unbowed published a 222-page presidential platform Friday that calls for an immediate exit from NATO’s integrated command and a staged withdrawal from the alliance itself, locking Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s far-left ticket into a hard break with the U.S.-led defense structure months before the 2027 vote.
The program, reported by POLITICO, also rejects what it labels a U.S. “tribute” of 5% of GDP for defense spending and pledges to nationalize key French defense firms, including ArianeGroup. The release landed one day after hundreds of thousands marched in a nationwide strike over wages and public services, intensifying pressure on Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s minority government as President Emmanuel Macron’s final months run down.
What France Unbowed put on paper
According to POLITICO’s account of the platform, France Unbowed would “immediately withdraw from NATO’s integrated command and then, in stages, from the organization itself.” The party says France would still assist European Union partners under EU treaties — a distinction Mélenchon has previously drawn in interviews — while insisting any Ukraine settlement rest on “collective security guarantees” rather than open-ended military support framed as NATO policy.
The document also targets NATO’s space footprint in France, pledging to close the alliance’s space center in Toulouse, and argues Paris should acquire a sovereign spaceplane capability. Lawmakers aligned with the party have previously pushed Dassault Aviation’s Vortex reusable orbital concept. France Unbowed further wants tighter regulation of lethal autonomous weapons and nuclear arms, and says France should prioritize domestic production of “critical enablers” — communications, intelligence and logistics gear that NATO partners now often source through U.S. channels.
A more detailed defense annex is promised later, a France Unbowed lawmaker told POLITICO. Until that text appears, the Friday platform is the clearest written statement of how Mélenchon’s camp would reorder France’s alliance posture if it reaches the Élysée.
Why the timing matters for France politics
Polls cited by POLITICO and European coverage place Mélenchon second behind Marine Le Pen in the race to succeed Macron. Both candidates now advertise a break with NATO’s integrated command: Le Pen’s National Rally has long promised to leave the command structure, while France Unbowed goes further by staging a full exit from the organization. That convergence on the command question — from opposite ends of the spectrum — turns NATO membership into a 2027 ballot issue rather than a technocratic consensus.
The platform drop followed Thursday’s general strike, when the Interior Ministry counted more than 600,000 demonstrators and the CGT union claimed nearly 1.6 million across more than 200 marches, according to AP and The Guardian. About 70,000 police were deployed. The marches came a day after the National Assembly unanimously rejected the revenue section of the 2027 budget in first reading, forcing the text toward the Senate and a December reconciliation track, Euronews reported.

What changes if Mélenchon wins
A staged NATO exit would reopen questions that French governments have treated as settled since France rejoined the integrated military command in 2009: basing, nuclear consultation, intelligence sharing and the status of U.S. and allied assets on French soil. Closing the Toulouse NATO space center would be a concrete early test. Nationalizing ArianeGroup and related firms would collide with EU competition rules and existing export contracts — details the promised defense annex will have to address.
Unlike Le Pen’s party, France Unbowed has not said it would cut assistance to Ukraine outright, POLITICO noted, but it frames peace as a diplomatic settlement with collective guarantees. That wording leaves room for interpretation and will be scrutinized by Kyiv and by EU partners who treat French logistics and airlift as part of the wider European support chain.
