MBTA service changes this winter come in three kinds: planned shutdowns for track and signal work, holiday schedules, and storm schedules when snow hits Greater Boston. This guide explains each one for the 2026-27 season, lists the subway and Commuter Rail disruptions the MBTA had posted as of Oct. 22, 2026, and shows where to check official live information before you ride.
The guide is updated as the MBTA posts new work. For the full stop-by-stop detail of November’s closures, see our MBTA November 2026 service changes guide.
Planned MBTA shutdowns posted for late 2026
These are the multi-day closures on the MBTA’s alerts feed when we checked. Dates can change, so confirm on mbta.com/alerts before you travel.
| Dates | Line | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Nov. 7 to Nov. 15 | Green Line | No trains between North Station and Babcock Street (B), Cleveland Circle (C), Kenmore (D) and Heath Street (E). Shuttle buses connect those stops with Copley and Back Bay; the MBTA tells riders to use the Orange Line between North Station and Back Bay. |
| Nov. 20 to Nov. 22 | Red Line | Shuttle buses replace trains between Broadway and North Quincy for switch and rail upgrades. Trains run between JFK/UMass and Ashmont, and Commuter Rail is fare-free between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass and South Station. |
| Until 2029 | Green Line E Branch | Symphony station is closed for accessibility upgrades. Use Prudential or Northeastern. |
Commuter Rail riders should also note new fall/winter timetables that took effect Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, on lines including Newburyport/Rockport and Greenbush. Download the current PDF timetable for your line from mbta.com.
How to plan around a shutdown
- Use the MBTA Trip Planner or the MBTA Go app, which show shuttle routes and travel times.
- Look for fare-free alternatives. During recent closures the MBTA has made parallel Commuter Rail segments and some bus routes free.
- All shuttle buses are accessible, and station staff can arrange accessible van service.
- Allow extra time. The MBTA has warned of trips at least 25 minutes longer during Green Line closures.
MBTA holiday schedules for 2026-27
The MBTA runs weekend schedules on most major federal and state holidays. It says it will post details for these upcoming dates:
- Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026
- Christmas Eve: Thursday, Dec. 24, 2026
- Christmas Day: Friday, Dec. 25, 2026
- New Year’s Eve: Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026
- New Year’s Day: Friday, Jan. 1, 2027
As a reference point, on Labor Day 2026 subway, bus and The RIDE ran on a Sunday schedule and Commuter Rail ran a weekend schedule. When the MBTA runs a weekend schedule, routes that do not normally run on weekends are out of service. The agency sells $10 Commuter Rail tickets on select holidays, and $10 weekend passes are good on all three days of federal holiday weekends.
The Charlie Service Center is closed on New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, among other holidays, and closes at 2 p.m. the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
MBTA storm service: what changes when it snows
The MBTA’s Winter Weather Travel Guide says snow, ice, wind and debris are the main causes of winter disruptions, and it recommends avoiding travel during storms when possible.
- Subway and trolley: street-level lines, such as the Green Line and Mattapan Trolley, are the most likely to be delayed. Trains may run on reduced schedules or at slower speeds, and in rare cases service is suspended or replaced by shuttles.
- Bus: each route runs either its regular schedule or a storm schedule, which the MBTA describes as reduced service similar to Saturday. Some routes use posted snow routes to avoid narrow streets and steep hills; those are marked on PDF schedules.
- Commuter Rail: lines may run regular service or a reduced storm schedule. The MBTA publishes storm timetables for each line and posts which one is active on its Winter Weather page.
- Bus stops: the MBTA clears key bus routes and Silver Line stops within 24 hours after snowfall ends; cities and towns clear the rest.
- State emergencies: if the governor issues a state of emergency or travel ban, service levels can change, and the MBTA posts updates on its website, the app and social media.
For city parking rules during the same storms, see our Boston snow emergency parking rules.
Fares this season
Since Sept. 1, 2026, riders can make unlimited transfers between bus, subway and ferry within a two-hour window and pay only the highest single fare, part of the MBTA’s fall fare pilots. Fall service changes that began Sept. 6 added Red Line frequency, especially on weekends, and moved Route 65 to run between Brighton Center and Ruggles.
