The Patriots’ season so far has been uneven, and the player most associated with its direction is quarterback Drake Maye. This report sets out where his season and contract stand using official team and public-record sources, and then, in clearly labeled sections, offers our analysis of what the numbers could mean.
Where the season stands
New England opened the season on Wednesday, Sept. 9, with a 13-10 loss at Seattle, a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl, then beat Pittsburgh 20-3 at Gillette Stadium, lost 35-6 at Jacksonville and won 29-26 at Buffalo on Oct. 4, according to Pro Football Reference and Patriots.com game notes. The Buffalo win was the first by a visiting team in the Bills’ new stadium, per the Patriots’ game notes. Our reports on the Jaguars loss and the preview of the Raiders game cover those results in detail.
Maye’s Week 4 line was 22 of 37 for 269 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, according to CBS Sports and ESPN’s recap, plus 54 rushing yards, and he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week, NESN reported. His season totals through four games are 854 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions, based on search excerpts of NFL.com and Patriots.com stats that we have not checked against a box score. The seven interceptions, a count that includes one in the Buffalo game, are the number that stands out against the positive Week 4 performance. The Patriots’ Week 5 injury report lists Maye with a right-shoulder designation but no game status, per the team.
The contract
Spotrac’s contract page for Maye lists a 2026 cap hit of $9.99 million and a 2027 cap hit of $11.66 million. Over the Cap’s fifth-year option projections list a 2028 option price of $25.836 million for him; the same table shows higher tiers depending on playing time and Pro Bowl selections, up to $50.308 million. Under the NFL’s rookie contract rules, teams can exercise a fifth-year option on a first-round pick after the third season, so a decision would come in the 2027 offseason. Those tiers are from the Over the Cap projection, which depends on how the league calculates the option, and the final number can differ.
The cap picture
Spotrac’s team summary lists roughly $37.2 million to $37.5 million of 2026 cap space for the Patriots, while Over the Cap lists $34.7 million. The two sites count differently, such as whether they use the top-51 rule. For 2027, Spotrac projects between $10.1 million and $20.4 million in cap space depending on assumptions, and lists 10 draft picks for the 2027 draft. Maye’s low cap hit is a major reason the team has room: the figures above mean a young quarterback is currently costing a fraction of what a veteran starter at the position typically earns.
Analysis: what to watch
This section is our analysis and projection, not reporting. Three questions will probably shape the next year. First, turnovers: the interception count suggests the offense’s biggest fix is protecting the ball, a theme head coach Mike Vrabel raised before the Raiders game, according to our Raiders preview. Second, pass protection: the Boston Globe reported that the line allowed 21 pressures on Maye against Buffalo, and two offensive linemen, Mike Onwenu and Greg Van Roten, are on injured reserve per our reports on Onwenu and Van Roten. Third, the timing of any long-term contract: with the fifth-year option available, the team has flexibility, and a mid-season extension would be unusual. Our projection is that the option decision, not an immediate extension, is the more likely 2027 development, but the club has not said so.
What we do not know
We have not seen contract language beyond the third-party trackers, the severity of the shoulder designation is unclear, and the Patriots have not discussed extension timing publicly in the sources we reviewed. Any projection about the next two or three seasons depends on health and on whether the offensive line stabilizes.
