This guide uses Chart House’s Boston location and private events pages, its posted menu as of Oct. 19, 2026, and the National Park Service’s history of Long Wharf. It is not based on a visit by The Boston Report.
Hancock’s Counting House
The restaurant occupies the four-story Gardiner Building. Chart House says it was built around 1763 and served as the office of the merchant Thomas Hancock and later his nephew John Hancock, which is why it is often called “Hancock’s Counting House.” The restaurant points to original fixtures including Hancock’s safe, wide wooden beams, floors, the staircase and red-brick walls. The National Park Service’s account of Long Wharf is more cautious, saying the Chart House building “dates from the 1830s with perhaps some colonial sections.” Either way, it is the oldest surviving structure on the wharf.
Long Wharf itself, the Park Service notes, once stretched 1,586 feet into the harbor and was central to colonial Boston’s trade, including the transatlantic slave trade; a marker installed in 2020 at the end of the wharf recognizes that history.
