Canadians planning a trip to Boston this fall or winter can use this guide to the documents, money rules, flights and game dates that matter most in late 2026. Canadian travel to the United States is recovering but remains well below 2024 levels: Canadian residents made 1.9 million return trips from the U.S. by car and air in September 2026, up 6.8% from a year earlier, Travel Market Report reported from Statistics Canada data released Oct. 13.
What ID Canadians need to enter the U.S.
Canadian adults entering the United States by land or water need a valid Canadian passport, a WHTI-compliant enhanced driver’s licence or enhanced ID card, or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS, under the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Flying in is stricter: the Canada Border Services Agency says a valid Canadian passport is required for international air travel, and children flying must carry their own passport.
Ottawa recommends that every Canadian travel abroad with a valid passport, calling it the only reliable and universally accepted travel document. Parents travelling with a child alone or with only one parent should carry a consent letter.
The 30-day registration rule for longer stays
Most Boston visits are short, but anyone staying 30 days or longer in a single visit should know the U.S. alien registration requirement. According to the U.S. Embassy in Canada:
- No action needed if you arrived by air, were issued Form I-94 at a land crossing, hold a U.S. visa or work permit, or are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Registration needed if you drove in without being issued an I-94 and will stay 30 days or more. This mainly affects snowbirds.
- How: online through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. There is no fee, and Canadians are exempt from fingerprinting.
- The clock resets each time you leave the U.S.; separate trips are not added together.
The exchange rate and what you can bring home
The Bank of Canada’s daily rate on Oct. 21, 2026 was 1.4057 Canadian dollars per U.S. dollar. At that rate, a US$100 hotel night costs about C$141 before card fees, and a US$20 restaurant tip is about C$28. Boston prices are posted in U.S. dollars and Massachusetts adds sales tax at the register, so budget in CAD before you go.
Returning to Canada, the CBSA personal exemptions depend on how long you were away:
- Under 24 hours: no personal exemption for same-day shoppers.
- More than 24 hours: up to C$200 in goods, not including alcohol or tobacco. Go over and duty applies to the whole amount.
- More than 48 hours: up to C$800, which can include 1.5 litres of wine, 1.14 litres of spirits or 8.5 litres of beer.
- More than 7 days: still C$800, but goods other than alcohol and tobacco may be shipped home after you.
Since Sept. 8, 2026, Canada has charged surtaxes on a list of U.S. goods. Purchases over your exemption can be caught by them, so check the CBSA list before a big shopping trip.
Getting to Boston from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa
Boston Logan has nonstop service to several Canadian cities. Porter Airlines added Toronto Pearson–Boston (14 flights a week) and Montreal Trudeau–Boston (7 a week) in May 2026, on top of its existing Toronto City (Billy Bishop) and Ottawa routes, for a combined eight daily flights, according to Porter. Air Canada also flies to Boston from Canadian hubs.
Driving from Montreal to Boston is roughly 500 km, through Quebec into Vermont and New Hampshire. Travellers crossing by land can sign up for NEXUS through the joint CBSA and U.S. CBP program to use faster lanes.
Bruins and Celtics games against Canadian teams
Many Canadian visitors build a Boston trip around a game. Bruins home games against Canadian NHL clubs at TD Garden this season, per the Bruins’ published schedule:
- Montréal Canadiens: Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026, 7 p.m. ET
- Winnipeg Jets: Wednesday, Nov. 25, 7 p.m. ET
- Toronto Maple Leafs: Friday, Nov. 27, 1 p.m. ET (the annual Black Friday game)
- Vancouver Canucks: Sunday, Nov. 29, 5 p.m. ET
- Edmonton Oilers: Wednesday, Dec. 30
- Toronto Maple Leafs: Saturday, Jan. 30, 2027
The Bruins say the Black Friday matinee is expected to feature Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, on his first visit to TD Garden. In basketball, the Celtics host the Toronto Raptors on Monday, Jan. 25, 2027, at 7 p.m. ET and Sunday, Feb. 14, 2027, at 1 p.m. ET, according to NBA.com.

Planning your days in Boston
Boston is compact and easy to walk. A typical first visit covers the Freedom Trail through downtown and the North End, Fenway Park, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Charles River Esplanade. TD Garden sits above North Station, so game nights pair easily with dinner in the nearby North End. For food ideas, see our guide to new Boston restaurants this October and our profile of the North End’s Regina Pizzeria.
Additional details
- Travel trends: Canadian car trips home from the U.S. were up 5.6% year over year in September 2026 but 31.1% below September 2024. Air trips were up 11.6% but 18.7% below 2024.
- Carrying cash: you must declare C$10,000 or more in currency and monetary instruments when crossing. NEXUS lanes cannot be used if you carry that much.
- Valuables: the CBSA will register serial-numbered valuables on Form BSF407 before you leave, which helps prove you owned them in Canada.
