Boston to NYC in 2026: Acela, Northeast Regional, Bus and Flight Options

Boston to NYC options for 2026: Acela and Northeast Regional trip times, reported fares, bus lines from South Station and Logan flights to LGA and JFK.

Getting from Boston to NYC comes down to three choices: Amtrak, an intercity bus or a short flight from Logan Airport. With Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the holiday season ahead, here is how the train, bus and plane options between Boston and New York City compare in 2026, with schedules, reported fares and current service alerts.

Amtrak from Boston to New York: Acela vs. Northeast Regional

Amtrak runs two services between Boston and Manhattan. Both leave from South Station, stop at Back Bay and arrive at New York Penn Station, where trains use Moynihan Train Hall, on the west side of Midtown.

The Acela is Amtrak’s high-speed line and sells business and first class seats. Its newer NextGen Acela trains, which can reach 160 mph, entered service in late summer 2025, and more trainsets are scheduled to arrive through 2027, according to Boston Uncovered. The Northeast Regional is the lower-cost option with coach and business class.

A sample of Amtrak’s Sunday, Oct. 25, timetable listed on booking site Omio showed the 6:05 a.m. NextGen Acela from South Station reaching Penn Station at 9:51 a.m., a trip of 3 hours 46 minutes. The 6:25 a.m. Northeast Regional arrived at 10:53 a.m., 4 hours 28 minutes later. Midday Regional trips were scheduled at about 4 hours 11 minutes to 4 hours 26 minutes.

Amtrak fares: what travelers have found

Amtrak prices change with demand, so the same train can cost far more on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving than on a quiet Tuesday. Boston Uncovered reported in June 2026 that Acela fares between Boston and New York had been spotted as low as $74 when booked in advance on midweek dates.

Amtrak also offers “Night Owl” coach fares on select trains departing between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Boston Uncovered reported in April that these started at $20 between Boston and Manhattan and quoted Amtrak as saying the deal runs through December. Amtrak’s own fare search shows the lowest price for a given date.

Check alerts before you book. Amtrak says infrastructure work on New Jersey’s Portal North Bridge is affecting Northeast Corridor service from Oct. 9 to Nov. 15, 2026. Most of that work sits south of New York, but it can ripple into schedules on through trains.

Bus from Boston to NYC

Buses are often the cheapest way to make the trip. FlixBus, Greyhound, Peter Pan and Megabus all sell Boston-to-New York tickets, mostly from the South Station bus terminal above the train station.

OurBus added a South Station route in August 2026, according to Boston.com, with promotional one-way fares from $19 on select dates in August and September. The company also picks up at Back Bay, Northeastern University and Boston College, and its buses include Wi-Fi, restrooms and charging ports, the report said.

Bus travel time depends heavily on traffic on the highways between the two cities and on approaches into Manhattan. On holiday getaway days, leave extra time for connections.

Flights from Boston Logan to LaGuardia and JFK

Delta runs its Delta Shuttle between Logan and LaGuardia. One Mile at a Time reported in 2025 that Delta flew the route up to 15 times a day, with hourly departures from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and that American Airlines operated up to four daily flights. JetBlue stopped flying Logan to LaGuardia on April 30, 2025, but kept its Logan to JFK service, according to the same report.

Flights are scheduled at just under 90 minutes, but airport security, boarding and the ride from LaGuardia or JFK into Manhattan add time. Many travelers compare total door-to-door time against the train’s downtown-to-downtown trip.
