Walter Koenig, the actor who played navigator Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek and in the franchise’s first wave of films, has died at 90. His representatives told the BBC that he died of old age on Sunday night, Oct. 25, 2026, at his home in North Hollywood, with his daughter and niece at his side. His death was also confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, according to The Guardian.
Koenig was one of the last surviving members of the starship Enterprise’s original bridge crew. His death leaves William Shatner and George Takei among the few remaining cast members from the 1960s series.
Walter Koenig’s road to Star Trek
Koenig was born in Chicago and grew up in Manhattan, the son of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania who had come from the Soviet Union. He trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York and landed his first screen role, uncredited, on the war drama Combat! in 1962.
He joined Star Trek in its second season in 1967 as Chekov, the young Russian officer at the navigation console, and appeared in 36 episodes before the show ended in 1969. He went on to play the character in the original-cast feature films that began in 1979, and the BBC noted his brief return in Star Trek Generations in 1994. He earned Saturn Award nominations for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
A writer and a second sci-fi icon
Koenig’s work went well beyond the bridge. He wrote “The Infinite Vulcan,” an episode of the 1970s animated Star Trek series, and scripts for Land of the Lost, The Incredible Hulk, Family and The Powers of Matthew Star. Many science fiction fans also knew him as Alfred Bester, the menacing telepathic police officer on Babylon 5, a role he played from 1994 to 1998.
He kept working late in life. He appeared in the independent films InAlienable in 2010 and Renegades in 2017, voiced Anton Chekov in Star Trek: Picard in 2023, and this year won a Platinum best actor prize at the Independent Shorts Awards for the short film “Mr Fleischmann.”
The Babylon 5 role showed a different side of him. Where Chekov was eager and sometimes comic, Bester was cold and controlling, and Koenig played him with a quiet menace that made the character one of the show’s most memorable recurring villains. The part introduced him to a new generation of science fiction viewers in the 1990s.
Tributes from the Enterprise crew
George Takei, who played Sulu, posted a tribute on Facebook. “My heart is heavy,” he wrote, adding: “Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.” Takei closed with a line any Star Trek fan would recognize: “Keep navigating a steady course.” Koenig was the best man at Takei’s wedding in 2008. Shatner said he was “deeply saddened” by the news.
The family’s statement was shared through Zachery McGinnis of Galactic Productions, according to The Guardian. Koenig kept meeting fans at conventions into his 80s, including the 2016 appearance pictured above.
Family and legacy
Koenig married actor Judy Levitt in 1965; she died in December 2022 at 83. Their son, Andrew Koenig, known for the sitcom Growing Pains, died in 2010 at 41. Walter Koenig is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig.
His death comes during a busy week of entertainment news, including People’s pick of Noah Wyle as Sexiest Man Alive and the announcement of an immersive David Bowie concert in Berlin. For generations of viewers, though, Koenig’s place is fixed: at the navigation station, plotting the next course.
