The Strait of Hormuz mines dispute flared again on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2026, when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said three oil tankers struck sea mines and caught fire while using what it called an unauthorized route south of the strait. U.S. Central Command has rejected Iranian claims of mine strikes, saying the main shipping lanes are clear.
What the IRGC claims about Strait of Hormuz mines
In a statement carried by Iranian state media, the IRGC said the three tankers exploded after hitting mines over the previous 24 hours, Reuters and AFP reported via Arab News Unverified claim, IRGC (IRGC). The Guards said the ships had switched off their radar and navigation systems, ignored warnings from the IRGC Navy, and were abandoned on the strait’s southern shores.
The IRGC did not name the vessels or report casualties, and no shipowner or flag state had confirmed the account by Thursday morning ET. The IRGC Navy also said it captured a U.S. “spy and deception” drone west of the strait, Al Jazeera reported Unverified claim, IRGC Navy (IRGC). The U.S. military had not publicly addressed the drone claim.
UKMTO reports a ship on fire near Khasab
The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center (UKMTO) said Thursday it had received a report from another ship’s master of a vessel on fire nine nautical miles (17 kilometers) north of Khasab, in Oman’s Musandam peninsula. UKMTO gave no cause and no casualty details, and did not say whether the burning ship was one of the three tankers in the IRGC statement.
CENTCOM says Hormuz shipping lanes are clear
In an Oct. 28 post on X, CENTCOM called reports in “Iranian-controlled media” about ships hitting mines false. “All internationally recognized primary transit routes through the Strait of Hormuz have been cleared of sea mines by US forces and remain so,” the command said, adding that “thousands of commercial vessels have safely used the transit lanes and continue today,” Gulf News reported.
The two accounts are not directly comparable. The IRGC places the incidents on a route it calls unauthorized, outside the lanes CENTCOM says are cleared, and CENTCOM did not address specific incidents. Gulf News noted that cleared transit lanes do not mean the whole Gulf is free of mines. The claim is therefore disputed and unverified.
Oil flows and diplomacy around the Strait of Hormuz
Iran has sought to control traffic through the strait since the regional war began in February, and the United States has answered with a counter-blockade of Iranian ports. U.S. Energy Information Administration figures cited by Gulf News show flows through Hormuz fell from 21.6 million barrels a day in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 4.9 million in the second quarter of 2026. The Boston Report covered a tanker disabled in a late-reported attack on Oct. 27.
Diplomacy continues alongside the threats. President Donald Trump said Washington is communicating with Iran through mediators, and Qatar-led mediators are urging Tehran to admit U.N. inspectors to bombed nuclear sites in exchange for some sanctions relief, Anadolu Agency reported, citing Axios. AP sources say U.S. officials have told allies to prepare for possible strikes after the Nov. 3 U.S. elections. Oil reacted to those reports this week, as noted in our Oct. 28 briefing; Houthi forces also claimed a strike on Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura refinery.
