Newton is a city of villages, and its restaurants follow that pattern. Newton Centre, West Newton, Nonantum, Newton Highlands, Auburndale and Waban each have their own small commercial center, while the Needham Street corridor has larger plazas.

How we chose these places

This list starts with businesses in The Boston Report’s Newton directory, then adds places from Google Maps business profiles checked on Oct. 22, 2026. For Newton, we chose independent restaurants with strong ratings and many reviews, and spread the list across villages rather than concentrating on one. We did not accept payment for placement, and we did not include places that Google marked as permanently or temporarily closed. Ratings and review counts are a snapshot from that date and will change.

Restaurant hours change often, especially around holidays and in winter. The hours above come from each business’s Google profile, not from the restaurant directly, so call ahead or check the restaurant’s own website before you go. Tips before you go

Most Newton villages have metered parking or small municipal lots. The Green Line D branch stops at Newton Centre, Newton Highlands and Waban, and the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line stops at West Newton, Newtonville and Auburndale.
