Looking for the best restaurants in Boston? This list gathers 30 restaurants across Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline that have earned outside recognition from the MICHELIN Guide, the James Beard Foundation, The New York Times or Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston awards. Every pick carries a “Why it’s here” note that links to the award or list behind it. The list was checked for closures as of Oct. 24, 2026.
Boston’s food scene got a new kind of scorecard on Nov. 18, 2025, when the MICHELIN Guide published its first Boston selection as part of a Northeast Cities edition. It named one starred restaurant, six Bib Gourmands and 19 Recommended restaurants. That guide is a good starting point, but it left out many places that critics and award committees have praised, so this list combines it with the other major sources. For splurge-only picks, see our Boston fine-dining guide. For openings, closings and news, return to the Boston Restaurants hub.

How we chose the best restaurants in Boston
We did not rank restaurants on our own tastes, and no restaurant paid to appear. A restaurant made the list only if it holds at least one of these recent, published honors:
- a star, Bib Gourmand or Recommended listing in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide Boston selection;
- a James Beard Award, finalist or semifinalist nod from 2025 or 2026;
- a spot on The New York Times’ 2025 list of the 25 best restaurants in Boston, or its national 50-best list;
- a 2026 Best of Boston award from Boston Magazine.
Most picks have more than one honor. We then checked recent coverage, the restaurants’ own sites and closure reports to confirm each one was still open. Price symbols come from the MICHELIN Guide’s price levels ($ to $$$$). “n/r” means MICHELIN has not rated that restaurant’s price, so we do not guess one. Check hours and book directly with each restaurant, because menus and hours change.

What the awards say about Boston dining in 2026
Boston’s first MICHELIN Guide drew mixed reactions. Boston Magazine called the selection thin, pointing out that well-known places such as Sarma, Comfort Kitchen, O Ya and Uni were left off, while Philadelphia earned 33 selections and three stars the same night. The James Beard Awards told a similar story in 2026: Greater Boston landed semifinalists including O Ya, Ostra, Comfort Kitchen, La Padrona, Tonino and Lenox Sophia, but no Massachusetts restaurant or chef advanced to the March finalist list, according to Boston.com.
Value is the other theme. Five of the six Bib Gourmands sit at MICHELIN’s $$ price level, and Zhi Wei Cafe is the only Boston pick rated $. Cambridge stands out: it holds four of the six Bib Gourmands. For more affordable and neighborhood choices, see our guides to Chinatown restaurants, the best ramen in Boston, Asian restaurants in Quincy and Malden and late-night food.
Places we left off, and why
Several recognized names are not on this list. Gaaeng Supper Club, whose chef Pao Thampitak was a 2026 Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist, is a pop-up with no permanent dining room. Nightshade Noodle Bar (MICHELIN Recommended) and Lê Madeline (2026 Beard semifinalist) are in Lynn and Quincy, outside the four cities this list covers. Sweet Cheeks Q, a 2026 Best of Boston barbecue winner, has announced it will close in Fenway on Nov. 24, per Boston.com. We will update this page when the next MICHELIN selection and the 2027 Beard semifinalists come out.
Best restaurants in Boston: FAQ
What is the best restaurant in Boston?
No single answer exists, but by formal awards, 311 Omakase in the South End is Boston’s only MICHELIN-starred restaurant as of October 2026. La Padrona in Back Bay has the broadest set of honors on this list: The New York Times’ 2025 national 50-best list, a MICHELIN Recommended listing and a 2026 James Beard semifinalist nod for its chef.
Does Boston have Michelin-star restaurants?
Yes. The MICHELIN Guide added Boston on Nov. 18, 2025. One restaurant, 311 Omakase, earned one star. Six restaurants received Bib Gourmands and 19 were Recommended.
What are good affordable restaurants in Boston?
MICHELIN’s Bib Gourmand list is a good place to start: Fox & the Knife, Bar Volpe, Jahunger, Mahaniyom, Pagu and Sumiao Hunan Kitchen. Zhi Wei Cafe downtown is the only Boston-area MICHELIN pick at the $ price level.
Where are the best seafood restaurants in Boston?
Neptune Oyster in the North End is MICHELIN Recommended and on the Times’ Boston list. Moëca in Cambridge won Best Seafood Restaurant in Boston Magazine’s 2026 awards, and Sullivan’s Castle Island received a James Beard America’s Classics award in 2025.
How did The Boston Report choose these restaurants?
Each restaurant holds at least one recent published honor from the MICHELIN Guide, the James Beard Foundation, The New York Times or Boston Magazine’s Best of Boston. We checked that each was open as of Oct. 24, 2026. No restaurant paid to be included.
