Boston Scientific, the medical device maker headquartered in Marlborough, will report third-quarter 2026 results on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in its first full quarterly report since a cyberattack disrupted its global operations in late August. The company has already told investors in a Sept. 7 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the Boston Scientific cyberattack is likely to have a material impact on third-quarter and full-year 2026 results, and that it is unlikely to meet the guidance it gave in July.
Key dates in the Boston Scientific cyberattack
- Aug. 25, 2026: Boston Scientific identifies a cybersecurity incident affecting some of its IT systems.
- Aug. 26: the company files a Form 8-K saying the incident caused a global disruption, including to its ability to process and ship customer orders, and that it had not yet determined whether the impact would be material.
- Sept. 7: a second 8-K under Item 1.05, the SEC’s material cybersecurity incident rule, says results are likely to be materially affected.
- Oct. 28, 8 a.m. ET: third-quarter results and an updated 2026 outlook, according to the company’s Aug. 10 announcement and the Sept. 7 filing.
What the company has disclosed so far
The Sept. 7 filing describes unauthorized activity that caused a network outage, cutting access to certain operating systems and business applications. That affected Boston Scientific’s ability to manufacture products and to process and ship orders. As of that filing, the company said it had found no evidence of continuing unauthorized access and that its investigation was ongoing.
The company said it had substantially restored its distribution network, with major distribution centers shipping orders “at or above normal operating levels,” that its sterilization facilities were operating, and that manufacturing had resumed at most facilities worldwide. It also said the timeline for full recovery was uncertain.
On guidance, the filing states that Boston Scientific is “unlikely to meet” the third-quarter and full-year 2026 net sales growth and adjusted earnings-per-share ranges it gave on July 29. It expects to recover some of the lost revenue as it works through backlogs, but said the full impact is not yet known. The company does not expect the incident to materially affect its long-term financial condition, according to the filing.
What analysts expect
Consensus figures vary by data provider. MarketBeat lists estimates of about $5.06 billion in third-quarter revenue and about $0.72 in earnings per share. The Boston Report could not confirm those figures with a second provider, so they should be read as one firm’s compilation. Reuters and Bloomberg both reported on Sept. 8 that the company had warned the attack would hurt 2026 results. Bloomberg’s headline said shares of Boston Scientific and Stryker fell on fallout from cyberattacks.
Investors on Wednesday will be looking for three things: how much revenue was lost or delayed in the third quarter, how much the company expects to recapture in the fourth quarter, and what the new 2026 outlook looks like.
A leadership change ahead of the report
In an Oct. 7 filing, Boston Scientific said Joe Fitzgerald, executive vice president and group president of its cardiovascular business, will become executive vice president and chief operating officer on Jan. 1, 2027. Fitzgerald joined the company in 1990. The filing lists an annual base salary of $1,050,000, a bonus target of 110% of base salary and a 2027 equity award with a grant-date value of $7 million.
Why it matters in Massachusetts
Boston Scientific’s headquarters is in Marlborough, about 30 miles west of Boston. Medical device makers are part of a life sciences cluster that also includes the biotech companies concentrated in Cambridge and Boston, a sector that has seen a wave of cuts this year, as we reported in our look at Kendall Square biotech layoffs.
The SEC adopted its cybersecurity disclosure rules in 2023, requiring public companies to report material cyber incidents on Form 8-K within four business days of deciding an incident is material. The SEC’s announcement explains the rule that produced Boston Scientific’s Item 1.05 filing.
What comes next
The company will release results before its 8 a.m. call on Oct. 28, with a webcast at investors.bostonscientific.com. The Boston Report will update this story after the release. Follow more local company earnings, including State Street’s third quarter, on our Boston Business & Economy hub.
