The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus has passed 10,000 confirmed cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Government data released on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, put the count at 10,060 confirmed cases and 4,887 deaths, Reuters and Al Jazeera reported. Kenya and Nigeria have reported imported cases, Uganda’s outbreak has ended, and a small number of patients have been treated in Europe.
This report lists every country that has reported a case, with dates and totals from the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and national health ministries. It separates three different things: a confirmed case reported by a country, a patient evacuated to another country for treatment, and a person evacuated after a possible exposure. Live figures are on The Boston Report’s Ebola outbreak tracker.
Ebola cases by country
The table below uses the latest figure each source has published. The cutoff dates differ, so the rows should not be added together as one synchronized total.
| Country | Confirmed cases | Deaths | Status and key dates | Source, as of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Democratic Republic of the Congo | 10,060 | 4,887 | Outbreak declared May 15; ongoing. 66 of 178 health zones in eight provinces affected. | DRC health ministry data reported Oct. 27 (Reuters, Al Jazeera) |
| Kenya | 9 | 2 | First imported case reported Oct. 6; last case reported Oct. 20; second death Oct. 23. All nine cases are in one cluster. | ECDC, Oct. 25; WHO Africa, Oct. 26 |
| Nigeria | 1 | 0 reported | Imported case confirmed Oct. 20 in Abuja in a woman who had traveled from Uganda. She was medically evacuated to Switzerland on Oct. 26. | WHO, Oct. 20; ECDC, Oct. 26 |
| Uganda | 20 | 2 | First imported case confirmed May 15, second May 16; last confirmed case June 21; last patient discharged July 16; WHO declared the outbreak over Aug. 27. The CDC also lists one probable case and one probable death. | WHO; ECDC; CDC |
| France | 1 | 0 | Imported case in a doctor returning from Congo, reported June 24; discharged July 4. | WHO; ECDC |
Patients treated outside the country where they were diagnosed are listed separately below. Two U.S. citizens diagnosed in Congo and treated in Germany are already counted in Congo’s total, WHO said in its Aug. 1 update, so they should not be added again.
| Country | What happened | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | Two U.S. citizens infected in Congo were evacuated for treatment: a health care worker on May 18, and a humanitarian worker who tested positive July 10 and was flown to Germany July 13. | Evacuated patients (counted in Congo’s total) |
| Netherlands | A health care worker based in Congo tested positive Sept. 29, was admitted to Leiden University Medical Center on Oct. 1 and was discharged Oct. 9. | Evacuated patient |
| Switzerland | The Nigeria case was medically evacuated to Switzerland on Oct. 26. | Evacuated patient (counted in Nigeria’s total) |
| United Kingdom | A U.K. resident who had treated Ebola patients in Congo was evacuated and isolated in a London hospital, reported July 21. The person had no symptoms and the move was described as a precaution. | Possible exposure, not a confirmed case |
| Canada | No cases of Ebola disease have ever been reported in Canada. | No cases |
| United States | No cases linked to this outbreak have been confirmed in the United States, according to the CDC. | No cases |

Where the cases are inside Congo
WHO’s Oct. 23 Disease Outbreak News gave provincial figures with data through Oct. 20, when Congo’s national total stood at 9,704 confirmed cases and 4,687 deaths. These provincial figures are not Oct. 27 totals. Their case counts add up to the Oct. 20 national total; they do not add up to the newer 10,060 figure.
| Province | Confirmed cases | Deaths |
|---|---|---|
| Ituri | 7,040 | 3,271 |
| North Kivu | 2,146 | 1,199 |
| Haut-Uélé | 421 | 183 |
| Tshopo | 76 | 27 |
| Bas-Uélé | 13 | 4 |
| South Kivu | 3 | 1 |
| Nord-Ubangi | 3 | 1 |
| Sud-Ubangi | 2 | 1 |
Sources: WHO (Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, data as of Oct. 20); Congo’s National Institute of Public Health via ECDC (smaller provinces, unchanged through Oct. 24). Provincial figures can change as cases are reclassified.
The CDC says South Kivu has reported no confirmed cases since May 29. WHO said 307 of the 482 deaths reported between its Oct. 8 and Oct. 23 updates occurred in communities rather than treatment centers, which it said points to problems with early detection and access to care. On Oct. 20, 79.7% of the 30,130 contacts under follow-up were seen, below the 95% threshold WHO cites.
North America and Europe
The CDC said on Oct. 27 that no Ebola cases tied to this outbreak have been confirmed in the United States and that the risk to the American public and travelers remains low. Travelers who were in Congo in the previous 21 days may not board commercial flights to the United States, and U.S. citizens who were in Uganda or South Sudan must enter through designated airports for screening. U.S. citizens infected in Congo were treated in Germany; those cases are not evidence of transmission in the United States.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says there have been no cases of Ebola disease in Canada and that the risk to the general population is low. Canada’s temporary border measures for travelers from Congo, Uganda and South Sudan run until Nov. 27.
ECDC assesses the risk for the general population in the European Union and European Economic Area as very low. It said it expects imported cases in Europe to remain rare and mostly involve medical evacuations.
Vaccines and treatment
No vaccine or treatment is licensed for Bundibugyo virus disease. Ervebo, licensed against the Zaire species of Ebola, is being used in Congo under research protocols. On Oct. 23 the TUMAINI Phase 2/3 trial of vaccine candidates began in Bunia, according to ECDC.
