How the Patriots came back in the rain

New England trailed 13-3 at halftime after Malik Willis led an 11-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Malik Washington with eight seconds left in the half, according to the NFL’s official game book. Zane Gonzalez had added field goals of 31 and 52 yards for Miami, the first set up when Miami recovered an Efton Chism III fumble at the New England 19. Andy Borregales kicked a 34-yard field goal for New England’s only first-half points and later missed from 40 yards.

The game turned in the third quarter. Maye threw a 43-yard touchdown to Kyle Williams. It was first ruled incomplete, but Patriots coach Mike Vrabel challenged and replay showed Williams crossed the goal line before he lost the ball, the AP reported. On the next possession, New England drove 73 yards in 13 plays, and Maye faked a pitch to Rhamondre Stevenson and walked in from 2 yards with 59 seconds left in the quarter for a 17-13 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, two plays after Kevin Byard intercepted Willis, DeMario Douglas turned a short catch into a 48-yard touchdown that made it 24-13. Gonzalez missed a 43-yard try midway through the quarter, and Miami did not score again until Willis hit rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. for a 35-yard touchdown with 2:04 left. The Dolphins’ two-point try failed, and Stevenson recovered Bradley Pinion’s onside kick to let New England run out the clock.

Maye’s streak with a short-handed offense

Maye went 16 of 20 for 199 yards. Patriots.com’s analysis said he completed 9 of 10 passes for 146 yards in the second half. AP noted it was his fifth straight game with at least three total touchdowns, and Patriots.com said he is the first Patriots quarterback to do that since Tom Brady in 2007.

He did it without much of his supporting cast. A.J. Brown (knee/ankle), Mack Hollins (calf) and running back TreVeyon Henderson (illness) were inactive. Patriots.com also listed wide receiver Romeo Doubs (shoulder) and offensive linemen Alijah Vera-Tucker (hamstring) and Mike Onwenu (ankle) as unavailable, and tight end Hunter Henry left with a foot injury. Stevenson carried 19 times for 82 yards, and Douglas caught three passes for 76 yards.

Willis, a week after leading Miami to its first win, completed 21 of 32 passes for 211 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and he was sacked five times, AP reported.

By the numbers: the game book

New England outgained Miami 313 yards to 269, a 44-yard (16%) edge, while Miami had one more first down (17 to 16). The difference came on the ground. The Patriots ran for 131 net yards on 36 carries (3.6 a carry), while Miami gained 74 on 23 (3.2), so New England finished with 57 more rushing yards, or 77% more (TBR calculations from the NFL game book). Miami had more net passing yards, 195 to 182, but Maye averaged 7.9 yards per pass play to Miami’s 5.3.

New England converted 6 of 14 third downs and both of its fourth-down tries. Miami converted 7 of 14 third downs. The Patriots were penalized seven times for 46 yards. Each team lost one turnover: Chism’s first-quarter fumble led to a Miami field goal, and Byard’s interception led to Douglas’ touchdown.
