Key figures: Q3 revenue $982.7 million (−2.2%; organic +4.7%) · GAAP EPS $6.86 (vs. $1.10) · Non-GAAP EPS $3.09 (+27.2%) · 2026 non-GAAP EPS guidance $11.35–$11.55
A $245.6 million reversal of tax reserves lifted Charles River Laboratories’ third-quarter GAAP profit more than sixfold to $333.1 million, or $6.86 a share, the Wilmington, Massachusetts, drug-testing company reported on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Without that one-time benefit, which the company valued at $5.06 a share, Charles River earnings were $3.09 a share on a non-GAAP basis, up 27.2% from $2.43, according to its earnings release filed with the SEC.
The company said the reserves were reversed after newly enacted tax legislation and the completion of certain tax requirements in a foreign jurisdiction. A year earlier, GAAP net income was $54.4 million, or $1.10 a share.
Revenue fell, but the underlying business grew
Reported revenue declined 2.2% to $982.7 million from $1.005 billion, which the company attributed mainly to divestitures completed in May 2026. Divested operations include a contract manufacturing (CDMO) unit, its Cell Solutions business and some European Discovery Services sites. Stripping out divestitures, acquisitions and currency moves, organic revenue rose 4.7%. The company said that beat its own outlook and marked a second straight quarter of organic growth.
Operating margins widened. The GAAP operating margin rose to 20.6% from 13.3%, helped by a $44.6 million benefit in the safety-testing segment tied to the same tax reversal. The non-GAAP operating margin rose 3.3 percentage points to 23.0%, which the company credited to the CDMO sale and higher study volume.
By the numbers: three segments, three stories
Discovery and Safety Assessment (DSA), the unit that runs the regulated safety studies drugmakers need before human trials, is the largest of the three. Its revenue slipped 0.7% to $596.3 million on a reported basis but grew 5.9% organically on higher study volume. Its non-GAAP operating margin improved to 26.8% from 25.4%.
Manufacturing Solutions posted the fastest organic growth, 7.4%, driven by its biologics testing and microbial businesses, even as reported revenue fell 6.2% to $178.9 million after the CDMO sale. Research Models and Services (RMS), which supplies laboratory animals and related services, was the weak spot: revenue fell 2.8% to $207.5 million and declined 0.6% organically, which the company attributed mainly to lower sales of small research models in North America and of large research models.
By TBR’s calculation from the release, DSA accounted for about 61% of quarterly revenue, RMS about 21% and Manufacturing about 18%.

Guidance raised for 2026
Charles River raised its full-year targets, last updated Aug. 5. It now expects organic revenue growth of at least 1.5%, up from a prior range of 0% to 1%. Reported revenue is now expected to fall 1.5% to 2.0%, compared with a prior forecast for a decline of 2.5% to 3.5%. Non-GAAP earnings guidance rose to $11.35 to $11.55 a share from $11.15 to $11.45, an increase of 15 cents at the midpoint. GAAP guidance jumped to $8.15 to $8.35 from $3.05 to $3.35, mostly reflecting the tax benefit.
The company said the higher outlook came mainly from stronger-than-expected DSA results and a lower tax rate. “We were encouraged by the continued strength of the biopharmaceutical demand environment and that was reflected in our financial results,” Chief Executive Birgit Girshick said in the release, adding that DSA net bookings and proposals continued to rise year over year.
Why it matters in Massachusetts
Charles River’s business depends on drug developers’ research budgets, which makes its results a gauge for the region’s life sciences sector. Its report follows Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ third-quarter results earlier this week and a broader run of earnings from Boston-area companies. For more, see our local business news coverage.
