Brighton beat Man City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 31, handing the Premier League leaders a second straight league defeat, while Manchester United slipped to 17th after a 2-0 loss at Chelsea that stretched their winless run in all competitions to nine matches, according to ESPN.
It was a lopsided afternoon at the top and bottom of English soccer’s top flight. City, who opened the 2026-27 season with seven straight league wins, have now lost back-to-back league games, and Brighton & Hove Albion moved within two points of the summit. In London, a red card to Lisandro Martínez turned a game United had controlled for an hour into another defeat for manager Michael Carrick.
Ayari’s early goal settles it at the Etihad
Yasin Ayari scored the only goal in the 11th minute. ESPN’s match report said the ball rebounded off Maxim De Cuyper and fell to Ayari, who finished from the center of the box into the bottom right corner. The goal carried extra weight for Ayari: three days earlier, on Wednesday, he missed a penalty in the shootout as City knocked Brighton out of the Carabao Cup at the same stadium. ESPN reported that Brighton stayed in the Manchester area between the two games.
City manager Enzo Maresca left defender Marc Guéhi out of the lineup and started Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández together in midfield, with Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden on the bench. Both playmakers came on in the second half, Cherki in the 55th minute and Foden in the 79th, but City could not find an equalizer.
Iliman Ndiaye was City’s most dangerous player. He headed wide from an Anderson cross in the first half, saw Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen tip a powerful shot onto the post after the break and later hit the side netting. City also appealed for a handball against Lewis Dunk and for a back-pass, and referee Craig Pawson waved both away, according to ESPN.
Martínez red card sinks Manchester United at Stamford Bridge
At Chelsea, United had the better of a scoreless first half. Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out by VAR for offside around the half-hour mark, and Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes both missed good chances, ESPN reported. Fernandes was back in the lineup as captain after being dropped following his outburst toward Carrick after the Oct. 21 defeat to Como, according to ESPN.
Chelsea broke through in the 50th minute when Morgan Rogers collected the ball near the center circle, ran through the United defense and finished past goalkeeper Senne Lammens, with Roméo Lavia credited with the assist. Martínez was booked in the 59th minute and sent off with a second yellow card in the 63rd for a forearm on Wesley Fofana, which also gave Chelsea a penalty. Cole Palmer converted it a minute later for the 2-0 final.
United finished with four more yellow cards, to Harry Maguire, Kobbie Mainoo, Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee, and lost Amad to an injury in the 77th minute. Estêvão had a late third Chelsea goal ruled out for offside. ESPN’s report described home fans chanting at Carrick that he would be “sacked in the morning” and said his future at the club “looks increasingly untenable.”
What the data shows
City’s loss was not for lack of the ball. ESPN’s match statistics show City had 62.4% possession, 21 shots to Brighton’s 7, six shots on target to three, and eight corners to two. By The Boston Report’s calculation from those figures, City took three times as many shots as Brighton and still lost, the second straight league defeat after a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa on Oct. 24.

The table has tightened sharply. City lead on 21 points from nine games, level with champions Arsenal, who have 21 from eight and visit Liverpool on Sunday with a chance to go top. Brighton, at 6-1-2, have 19 points and the league’s best goal difference at +17. Chelsea climbed to fourth with 16 points. In City’s first seven league games, every result was a win; across the last two they have one goal scored and three conceded.
At the other end, United are 1-4-4 with 7 points, the same total as 18th-place Crystal Palace. United have scored 10 league goals and conceded 15, and their only league win came on Aug. 30, a 5-2 home victory over Ipswich Town. Since then they have drawn four and lost three of seven league matches, by The Boston Report’s count from ESPN results.

Around the Premier League on Saturday
Tottenham Hotspur beat 10-man Crystal Palace 2-0 with headers from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off in the 13th minute, Spurs’ third straight win according to ESPN. Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, with Nikola Milenković scoring an own goal and Igor Thiago adding the second, leaving Forest 19th. Bournemouth beat Leeds 2-0, Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1, and Hull City and Ipswich Town drew 2-2.
For American fans, the weekend’s biggest test is still to come: Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday will decide whether City stay on top.
