Everton came from behind to beat promoted Coventry City 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, with striker Thierno Barry scoring twice and setting up the third. The victory lifted Everton to fifth in the Premier League ahead of the weekend’s other matches and came in David Moyes’ 592nd game as Everton manager, equalling Harry Catterick’s club record.

It was Everton’s third straight win, following a 1-0 victory at Newcastle four days earlier, according to the club.

How the Everton Coventry game turned

Coventry, managed by former Everton boss Frank Lampard, were the better side for long stretches and went ahead in the 52nd minute. Yann Gboho exchanged passes with Japanese winger Sakamoto and poked a close-range shot, deflected off James Tarkowski, past Jordan Pickford, according to Everton’s report and The Guardian.

Everton answered within four minutes. Vitalii Mykolenko swung in a cross from the left and Barry, holding off Jay Dasilva, headed it into the bottom corner. Just after the hour, Barry bundled in Tyrique George’s delivery to the back post for his 10th goal of the season. The Guardian reported that the ball came off Barry’s midriff and possibly his hand after a Dasilva clearance; replays were inconclusive and the goal stood.

With nine minutes left, Barry spun and threaded a pass down the left channel for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who beat goalkeeper Carl Rushworth at his near post. Dewsbury-Hall had been left out of the England squad announced earlier that day.

Coventry’s penalty complaints

Lampard felt his team were denied twice. Tarkowski survived a penalty appeal after appearing to pull the hair of Caleb Yirenkyi while challenging for a free kick, and Taiwo Awoniyi went down under a challenge from Mykolenko. Neither referee Stuart Attwell nor the video assistant, Timothy Wood, intervened, The Guardian reported. “The rules are fine. It’s not a red card and I kind of get that, but the rule remains it’s a foul so I felt it was a foul,” Lampard said.

Moyes told BBC Match of the Day he had not seen the hair pull. “We got a performance, and we got a result, but I have to say Coventry made it really difficult for us,” he said.

Barry’s scoring rate has jumped from about 0.20 goals per game last season to about 0.77 this season, by The Boston Report’s calculation from BBC figures. BBC Sport also noted the comeback was only the third time Everton had gone 1-0 down in the second half of a Premier League game and won by more than one goal, after 3-1 wins over West Ham in November 2008 and Burnley in September 2021.

“Haaland’s worried about him catching him now!” Moyes joked, according to The Guardian. Barry told the BBC he studies videos of Haaland and said his dance celebration came from an NFL player he saw on TikTok.

Moyes and the record

Moyes wrote in his programme notes that seeing his name alongside Catterick’s was “hugely humbling.” Catterick won two league titles and an FA Cup. The Guardian noted Moyes is in the final year of his contract and doing it with the smallest squad in the league. Everton go into the international break buoyant, and Moyes’ next game in charge would give him the record outright.

It has been a busy stretch at the top of English football, including Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Anfield and Brighton’s upset of Manchester City. For more global coverage, see our international news hub.
