Two quarterfinals at the Rolex Paris Masters on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, decided who goes to the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, and both went against Americans hoping to get there. Ben Shelton beat friend and countryman Tommy Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals, eliminating Paul from the race. Hours later, Carlos Alcaraz saved two match points and beat Taylor Fritz 6-7(10), 7-5, 6-3, ending Fritz’s bid for the final spot.

The results send Frances Tiafoe to Turin for the first time and give the last place to Spain’s Rafael Jodar, according to the ATP Tour and Reuters. The ATP Finals start Nov. 15.

Shelton serves his way into the Paris Masters semifinals

Shelton, the third seed and world No. 4, had already qualified for Turin. Paul needed to reach the final to pass Jodar. Shelton broke in the first set at 5-4 after two Paul double faults, converting his second break point with a return winner down the line, Reuters reported. Paul broke in the first game of the second set and held on to force a third, but Shelton broke again and served it out.

“I thought the first set was definitely a serving contest,” Shelton told the ATP. “I got a little lucky when I broke him in the first set.” He added that Tiafoe, 28, “has had an outstanding year. One of my best friends, and to see him make Turin for the first time is amazing.”

By the numbers: Shelton vs. Paul

Accounts of the serve stats differ. The ATP, citing Infosys ATP Stats, credited Shelton with 19 aces; Tennis Majors, reporting from the venue, counted 11 aces to Paul’s five. Both agree on the essentials below. The Boston Report lists the figures each outlet published rather than choosing between them.

Tennis Majors also found the rallies short: 42% of the 154 points lasted one shot or less, and only five went beyond nine shots. Shelton is the first American to reach the Paris semifinals since 2017, when Jack Sock won the title and John Isner also made the final four, according to the ATP. His two previous Masters 1000 semifinals both ended in titles, in Toronto in 2025 and Montreal in 2026.

Alcaraz escapes Fritz

Alcaraz, the world No. 2, had reached the quarterfinals on a walkover when Matteo Berrettini withdrew with an arm injury. Against Fritz he wasted three set points in a first-set tiebreak that Fritz won 12-10, then saved four straight break points at 0-40 in the second set before being broken for 4-3, Reuters reported. Fritz, ranked No. 12, earned two match points but could not convert. Alcaraz took the second set, raced to a 4-1 lead in the third and closed on his first match point. It was his first trip to the Paris semifinals.

Alcaraz, who won in Vienna last week as The Boston Report reported in its Alcaraz-de Minaur final recap, will face Casper Ruud or lucky loser Nuno Borges. Shelton plays home favorite Luca Van Assche, 22, who beat qualifier Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-5. Hijikata had upset seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the second round. Van Assche is the second-youngest French semifinalist in tournament history, behind Richard Gasquet in 2007.

Why it matters for American tennis

Three Americans were chasing Turin entering Friday. Shelton was already in, Tiafoe is now in, and Paul and Fritz are out. The women’s season finale also opens this weekend, with Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula drawn into the same group; read our world news coverage for more international sports and events.
