Patriots vs. Jets: Injury Report Hits the Offensive Line and Backfield

The Patriots have bounced back from a 1-2 start. They upset the Bills in Buffalo in Week 4, then routed the Las Vegas Raiders 45-17 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, when Drake Maye threw five touchdown passes. That puts New England at 3-2, second in the AFC East, heading into a Week 6 home game against the 2-3 New York Jets. Kickoff is Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1 p.m. on CBS. Oddsmakers have the Patriots favored by about a touchdown, and NBC Sports listed the line at Patriots -7.5 as of Tuesday. Our Patriots-Raiders recap covers Sunday’s game in detail.

The Raiders win came at a cost. Left tackle Will Campbell hurt his right knee, the same knee that put him on injured reserve last season, and did not return. CBS Sports listed him as doubtful for the Jets on Tuesday with an MCL injury. Rookie first-round pick Caleb Lomu is expected to play left tackle while Campbell is out. Running back TreVeyon Henderson, who sprained his ankle on a second-quarter jet sweep, was also listed as doubtful. Rhamondre Stevenson and Corey Kiner are expected to get most of the carries. Linebacker Dre’Mont Jones (shoulder) and cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Channing Canada and Karon Prunty were listed as questionable.

There is good news, too. Coach Mike Vrabel said Monday there is “a chance” that A.J. Brown practices this week, now that the star receiver is eligible to come off injured reserve. Brown has not played since spraining his ankle in Week 1, and the Patriots have also lost receiver Mack Hollins to IR with a calf strain. The Bills rematch fans keep asking about is not until Dec. 6 at Gillette. Our Patriots vs. Bills preview covers that game, and the full slate is on the Patriots page.

Bruins Win Three Straight as McAvoy Returns

Charlie McAvoy scored in his season debut on Tuesday night, a 6-3 win over the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center that opened Boston’s California road trip. McAvoy had served a six-game suspension. Fraser Minten scored twice and now leads the team with four goals, and he has five points in his last two games. Matthew Poitras, Pavel Zacha and Will Borgen also scored, with Borgen’s goal going into an empty net. Morgan Geekie had two assists, and Jeremy Swayman stopped 35 of 38 shots for his third straight win.

San Jose rookie Ivar Stenberg scored his first NHL goal, and Macklin Celebrini and Jacob Trouba also scored for the Sharks. Zacha’s goal with three seconds left in the second period gave Boston a 4-2 lead. Celebrini then scored on a power play early in the third period to make it 4-3, but Minten restored the two-goal lead at 11:47.

The win lifted Boston to 5-2-0 and followed Saturday’s 5-1 win over Philadelphia, which we covered in our Bruins-Flyers recap. The trip continues in Anaheim on Friday, Oct. 16, and ends in Los Angeles on Saturday, Oct. 17. Schedules and roster notes are on our Bruins page.

Celtics Preseason: Hornets Tonight, Pistons on Opening Day

The Celtics are 2-0 in the preseason. Boston rested its top seven rotation players and still beat Cleveland 124-113 on Oct. 8, with Luka Garza scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. On Oct. 10 at TD Garden, the Celtics beat Philadelphia 144-106, a team record for points in a preseason game, according to NBC Sports Boston. Payton Pritchard scored 25 points and Jayson Tatum added 23. Paul George, acquired in the Jaylen Brown trade, and center Mitchell Robinson made their Celtics debuts, and George had four first-half steals. Brown, now with the 76ers, did not play.

Boston hosts the Charlotte Hornets tonight at 7:30 p.m. and closes the preseason in Philadelphia on Thursday, Oct. 16. The regular season opens Tuesday, Oct. 20, when the Celtics host the Detroit Pistons at 3 p.m. on NBC and Peacock. That is the first game of the NBA’s opening-day schedule. Red Sox Offseason: Sonny Gray, Power Bats and the Lockout Clock

The Red Sox were eliminated in the AL Wild Card Series. Now chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has to plan an offseason while baseball’s labor deal is unsettled. The Boston Globe has reported that Dec. 1 is a soft deadline for moves, because the collective bargaining agreement expires and a lockout is widely expected. Boston has already locked in pieces for 2027. Catcher Adley Rutschman, infielder Curtis Mead and reliever Erik Miller, all added in midseason deals, are under team control for at least next season.

Sonny Gray, 36, said this week that he will pitch in 2027 and hasn’t ruled out returning to Boston. “I still want to win a World Series, whether that is [with] Boston or with whoever wants me,” he wrote to the Globe’s Alex Speier. Gray, who will be a free agent, went 18-5 with a 2.72 ERA this season. MLB.com’s list of offseason questions includes Roman Anthony’s health, Garrett Crochet’s recovery from a season mostly lost to left shoulder inflammation, and Breslow’s search for more power. Our earlier pieces on Breslow’s hunt for power bats and the Red Sox offseason go deeper, and the Red Sox page tracks the roster.

Revolution Face a Busy Week in the Playoff Race

The New England Revolution play FC Cincinnati tonight at 7:30 p.m. at TQL Stadium (Apple TV), and they host Chicago Fire FC at Gillette Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Revs are coming off a 3-0 home loss to Seattle, only their third home loss of the season, and have six regular-season games left. They beat Cincinnati 6-1 in Foxborough on March 15. Our Revolution playoff picture explains what’s at stake. For every team, schedule and event, visit the Boston Sports Hub.
