Salem Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, and city officials are warning Boston-area visitors to expect especially large crowds on Oct. 31 as the city also marks its 400th anniversary. Mayor Dominick Pangallo urged people to take the MBTA Commuter Rail or the Salem Ferry, leave cars at home and plan to head out after the 10:10 p.m. drone show, NBC Boston reported.

“Visitor trends throughout October indicate that we are expecting especially large crowds for Halloween night,” Pangallo said in a statement. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead, take public transportation, respect our rules and our residents, and enjoy a safe and fun visit to Salem.”

Getting to Salem on Halloween by train

The MBTA and its Commuter Rail operator, Keolis, are running extra trains on the Newburyport/Rockport Line on October weekends to serve Haunted Happenings, according to Destination Salem, the city’s tourism office. Riders can use the $10 Weekend Commuter Rail Pass for unlimited Saturday and Sunday travel, and a $5 round-trip ticket between Beverly and Salem is offered on October weekends.

Full-size bicycles and scooters are not allowed on weekend Newburyport/Rockport trains. The MBTA has also said that entry to the Salem station garage will be closed starting at 6 p.m. on Halloween, and cars will not be able to leave it until 11:30 p.m. or until festivities end, according to the city guidance published by NBC Boston.

The last scheduled trains out of Salem on Halloween night, as published by NBC Boston, are:

Destination Last train from Salem
Boston (North Station) 11:14 p.m.
Rockport 11:56 p.m.
Newburyport 12:26 a.m.

Riders coming from Boston should also check for subway work. The MBTA is suspending parts of the Green Line this weekend, as detailed in our report on the Green Line Halloween weekend shutdown, which may add time for anyone connecting to North Station.

Drone show, stages and when the party ends

The main event on Saturday night is a drone show at 10:10 p.m. over the North River, which can be seen from the MBTA platform or Washington Street, according to NBC Boston. The city’s public address system is set to sound at about 10 p.m. to signal the start of the finale.

Daytime and evening programming runs on stages at Salem Common, Front Street, Charlotte Forten Park, Washington Street, Federal Street and Hawthorne Boulevard, with activities ranging from witch hat design sessions to dance parties, comedy shows and storytelling. The city says the party ends after the drone show and visitors should plan to depart by 10:30 p.m., when police and public works crews begin clearing the streets.

Rules, fines and safety

Salem’s Halloween guidelines, as reported by NBC Boston, include the following:

  • Driving into Salem on Halloween is not advised because of numerous road closures; anyone who drives should use free satellite parking and avoid “Resident” zones to prevent fines and towing.
  • Public drinking is prohibited, and weapons, real or fake, will be confiscated.
  • Triple fines are in effect, and citations for offenses such as public drinking, vandalism and littering can reach $300 per violation.
  • For emergencies, call 911. For nuisance issues, call the Salem Police at (978) 744-1212.

The forecast published by NBC Boston on Friday called for clear skies, with temperatures in the mid-50s during the day and falling into the 40s at night.

By the numbers: why Salem pushes the train

City and MBTA officials have repeatedly pointed to crowd and parking figures to explain why they steer visitors to transit. The table below collects figures they cited this season.

Measure Figure
Expected October visitors More than 1 million
Average October weekday visitors About 65,000
Salem residents About 45,000
Public parking spaces About 2,800
Train riders to Salem on October 2025 weekends More than 111,000

By a Boston Report calculation from those figures, an average October weekday brings roughly 1.4 visitors for every Salem resident, and there are about 23 weekday visitors for every public parking space. The MBTA also said ridership on the Newburyport/Rockport Line has risen an average of 40% from September to October over the past three years, roughly 130,000 additional trips in October alone, and that weekend ridership rose 80% from September to October in 2025, Mass Transit magazine reported.

One more reminder for late-night travelers: daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks fall back one hour, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
