Explosions and a fire tore through a Panasonic materials factory in northern Taiwan early Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, injuring five workers and leaving two missing, local officials said. The Panasonic Hsinchu fire hit a plant that makes high-speed circuit-board laminates and chip packaging materials used in AI servers, a part of the supply chain that was already sold out.

Key figures: Fire broke out about 2 a.m. local time · 5 workers injured, 2 missing · 23 vehicles and 48 firefighters sent · Plant estimated at under 20% of Panasonic’s laminate capacity

What happened at the Hukou plant

The Hsinchu County Fire Bureau said the fire broke out at 2 a.m. at Panasonic’s five-story factory on Guangfu Road in Hukou Township, inside the Hsinchu Industrial Park, Focus Taiwan reported. The building had a steel frame and sheet-metal walls. The plant is run by Panasonic Industrial Devices Materials Taiwan Co., a unit of Japan’s Panasonic Holdings.

Loud explosions were reported as thick black smoke rose from the building, with the fire visible from several kilometers away, according to Taiwan News. The fire department first sent 23 fire and rescue vehicles and 48 personnel. Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS reported that blasts struck production lines on the first and fourth floors, that part of the structure collapsed and that more than 20 employees were working an overnight shift when it started. TVBS also reported a possible leak of methyl ethyl ketone, a solvent, from a fourth-floor storage tank, and said environmental officials were sent to test the air.

The fire was put out shortly before noon, county officials told Reuters. Panasonic confirmed that an explosion had occurred, that people were injured and that it was investigating the details and cause, according to Reuters.

Five injured, two still missing

The five injured men, three Taiwanese and two Vietnamese, were conscious when they were taken to the hospital, the fire bureau said. Their injuries included burns, a fracture, a head wound and breathing difficulties, according to Focus Taiwan. Two Taiwanese employees, both men in their 30s, remained missing as of the latest reports, and rescue workers were still searching for them. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are under investigation.

Why the fire matters for AI servers

The plant supplies Taiwan’s printed circuit board makers with materials used in computers and AI servers, Reuters reported. Its main products are copper-clad laminates, or CCL, the base material for circuit boards. Panasonic’s MEGTRON line of high-speed laminates is widely used in servers and networking gear.

Economic Daily News, a Taiwanese business paper, reported that the actual impact is still unclear but that people in the laminate industry expect supplies of mid- and high-end materials to get tighter. High-end CCL is already in short supply, the paper said, and Taiwan’s largest makers, Elite Material (EMC), Taiwan Union Technology (TUC) and ITEQ, are short of capacity to meet circuit-board makers’ demand. Expanding capacity takes time, so the industry does not expect them to absorb extra orders right away.

What the data shows

Public figures on the plant’s output are limited. These are the numbers reported so far:

Measure Figure Source
Hukou share of Panasonic CCL capacity Roughly under 20% (industry estimate) Economic Daily News
Panasonic MEGTRON core production bases 5 (Japan, Taiwan, two in China, Thailand) Economic Daily News
Workers on shift at the time More than 20 TVBS
Injured / missing 5 / 2 Hsinchu County Fire Bureau
Time to extinguish About 10 hours (2 a.m. to shortly before noon; TBR calculation) Fire bureau; Reuters

Because the Hukou plant is estimated to hold less than a fifth of Panasonic’s laminate capacity, the company has other sites to draw on. According to Economic Daily News, its biggest bases are in Koriyama, Japan, which makes top-grade products such as MEGTRON 7 and 8, and in Guangzhou and Suzhou, China. The paper said orders could shift either to those Panasonic plants or, if customers’ qualification schedules and delivery dates are tight, to Taiwanese laminate makers with overlapping products.

What to watch next

The key questions are how long the Hukou plant will be offline and whether Panasonic can move production to Japan, China or Thailand quickly. Any delay would add to pressure on a supply chain already stretched by AI demand. Server maker Supermicro this week reported that its sales nearly quadrupled on AI orders, and Taiwan is weighing new export rules for chips and chipmaking gear, a sign of how central the island’s suppliers have become.
