What is at stake for the Revolution

New England has 58 points from 32 games (18 wins, 4 draws, 10 losses), according to the ESPN MLS standings. Inter Miami is third with 56 points from 32 games, Chicago is fourth with 55 from 33 and Charlotte fifth with 53 from 33. Nashville leads the East with 71 points.

By TBR’s calculation, a Revolution win would clinch second place. New England would reach 61 points. Miami could finish no higher than 59 with one game left, and Chicago no higher than 58. A draw or a loss would push the race to Decision Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, when New England plays at Orlando City.

The Revolution have already clinched home-field advantage in Round One of the playoffs, according to the club’s match preview. Their 18 wins are the second-most in club history, and a win Sunday would match the club record of 12 home wins in a season. New England is 11-3-2 at home (11 wins, three losses and two draws), according to its ESPN results.

A four-game winning streak

New England lost 3-0 to Seattle on Oct. 10, then won 3-2 at Cincinnati, 1-0 against Chicago, 2-1 at Philadelphia and 3-2 against the New York Red Bulls. TBR covered the 2-1 win at Philadelphia that moved the Revolution into second place.

In Wednesday’s win over the Red Bulls, Dor Turgeman scored twice, Carles Gil became the eighth player in MLS history with 100 regular-season assists, and Dániel Gazdag scored the winner in the 83rd minute off the rebound of a Peyton Miller shot, according to the Revolution’s recap. Gil has a career-best 13 goals and a team-high 26 goal contributions, according to MLSsoccer.com. Turgeman has 12 goals, and Miller, an 18-year-old homegrown attacker, has seven goals and eight assists. Goalkeeper Matt Turner’s 134 saves are the second-most in MLS.

Messi and a Miami attack that leads the conference

Miami has scored 75 goals in 32 games, the most in MLS and eight more than any other team, according to the club. It has also allowed 55. Messi has a league-best 25 goals plus 15 assists, and Luis Suárez has 16 goals and 12 assists, according to MLSsoccer.com’s preview. Rodrigo De Paul leads Miami with 16 assists.

Miami has gone winless in its last two games, a 2-0 loss at the Red Bulls and a 2-2 home draw with Cincinnati on Wednesday that needed a 90th-minute equalizer from Riquelme Fillipi, according to MLSsoccer.com. The series has favored Miami: the Inter Miami preview lists an all-time record of seven Miami wins, three New England wins and one draw. Miami is unbeaten in the last five meetings, with four wins and a draw, and the teams drew 1-1 at Nu Stadium in April.

By the numbers: defense against attack

By TBR’s calculation from the ESPN table, Miami scores 2.34 goals per game to New England’s 1.69. The Revolution allow 1.38 goals per game, while Miami allows 1.72. Miami’s goal difference is plus-20, double New England’s plus-10, yet New England has two more points because it has turned more games into wins: 18 to Miami’s 15. Miami’s 11 draws are the most among the top five.

The playoffs begin with the Wild Card round on Nov. 18, and Round One runs from Nov. 20 to Dec. 2, according to the MLS playoff schedule. MLS Cup is Dec. 18. New England, in its first season under coach Marko Mitrović, clinched its first playoff berth since 2023 with the 3-2 win at Cincinnati on Oct. 14, according to MLSsoccer.com.
