Massachusetts residents who need a REAL ID or a driver’s license renewal in 2026 can handle many transactions online, but first-time REAL ID applicants still have to visit an RMV Service Center or AAA branch in person. Since Feb. 1, 2026, air travelers without a REAL ID or other federally accepted ID face a $45 TSA fee. Here is what the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles requires, what it costs and how long it takes.
Key facts: Massachusetts REAL ID and license renewal
- Driver’s license renewal (standard or REAL ID): $50
- Mass ID renewal: $25; REAL ID commercial license renewal: $75
- Upgrade to REAL ID before your license expires: $25
- Renew up to one year before the printed expiration date
- TSA Confirm ID fee without an accepted ID: $45 for 10 days of travel
Do you need a REAL ID in Massachusetts?
Under federal rules, people 18 and older need a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, or another TSA-accepted document such as a valid U.S. passport, to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. A Massachusetts REAL ID has a star in the top right corner; a standard license does not.
A standard Massachusetts license is still valid for driving. The difference matters at airport security. TSA’s Confirm ID program, which began Feb. 1, 2026, requires travelers without an accepted ID to verify their identity, a process the RMV says takes 10 to 30 minutes and costs $45 for 10 days of travel.
As of January 2026, more than 3.67 million Massachusetts residents, over 65% statewide, held a REAL ID, according to the RMV. Travelers flying south this winter can also see our guide to Boston to Florida flights from Logan.
REAL ID documents checklist
First-time REAL ID applicants must bring four original or certified documents. Laminated copies are not accepted.
- One proof of lawful presence, such as a U.S. passport or birth certificate
- One proof of your full Social Security number, such as a Social Security card or W-2
- Two proofs of Massachusetts residency, such as a lease, mortgage statement or utility bill
Your current name must match your documents. Anyone whose name has changed must also bring legal proof, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order.
How to get a REAL ID: online start, in-person finish
Applicants begin on the RMV’s Online Service Center, which requires a MyMassGov personal account. After finishing the online application, they schedule an appointment at an RMV Service Center, or at a AAA location for members, to have documents verified.
Walk-ins are possible but not guaranteed. If a Service Center cannot help a walk-in customer right away, staff will look for an open slot later that day or over the following days, according to the RMV, which asks people to cancel appointments they no longer need.
The card arrives by mail. The RMV says it typically arrives within 10 to 14 business days and advises travelers to allow three weeks after their appointment.
How to renew a Massachusetts driver’s license online
Holders of a full-term REAL ID or standard license can renew entirely online through the Online Service Center, without visiting an office, as long as they have not changed their name. Limited-term licenses must be renewed in person, and so must renewals for anyone without a Social Security number.
The RMV will block a renewal if the license is suspended or revoked, or if the driver has unpaid parking tickets, excise tax or E-ZPass violations. Drivers in that situation should check their license status first; our guide to Boston parking tickets, fines and appeals explains how to resolve city tickets. If a renewed license has not arrived after 30 days, the RMV asks drivers to contact it.
Massachusetts RMV fees for 2026
REAL ID credentials cost the same as standard ones. A replacement REAL ID license or Mass ID costs $25. Customers whose authorized stay in the U.S. is shorter than five years pay a prorated fee. Drivers heading out in winter weather can check our Boston weather page before an RMV trip.
