Harvard Square cheap eats are easier to find than the neighborhood’s reputation suggests. Between half-price happy hours, student-ID discounts and slice shops open past midnight, students, staff and visitors in Cambridge can eat for well under the cost of a sit-down dinner. This guide collects deals and budget-friendly spots reported this year by Boston Magazine, Harvard College and Eater Boston. Prices and hours change often, so check before you go.

The best-known deal: Grendel’s Den early-bird menu
Grendel’s Den (89 Winthrop St.) has been in Harvard Square since 1971. According to Boston Magazine’s October 2026 Harvard Square guide, the pub offers half-price food from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. The fine print: it’s dine-in only, each person must buy at least $5 in beverages, and leftovers can’t be taken home. The menu runs to sandwiches, spinach pie, brisket mac and cheese and molten brownies.
Student ID discounts near Harvard Yard
A July 2026 post on the Harvard College student life blog, written by a member of the Class of 2028, listed several discounts that are not always advertised:
- Luxor Cafe (148 Mt. Auburn St.): 10% off with a student ID. The family-owned cafe also sells a $25 pass for unlimited drinks plus one breakfast or lunch meal during its open hours, and the post says the two offers can be combined. Boston Magazine describes Luxor as a halal cafe and deli serving Turkish coffee, karak tea and hawawshi, an Egyptian meat-stuffed pita.
- Saloniki Greek (inside the Smith Campus Center): free fries with any meal for students with a valid ID.
- Van Leeuwen (Brattle Street): 15% off ice cream, shakes and baked goods with a student ID.
- The Boiling Crab (near Harvard Square): student combos for $10 to $11, each with a choice of three shrimp entrees, fries and a drink.
Discounts like these are set by each business and can end without notice, so ask at the counter.
Quick counter-service meals
Clover (Science Center, 1 Oxford St.): The Cambridge-born vegetarian chain shut down in 2026 and then reopened a few locations, Boston Magazine reports, including this one inside Harvard’s Science Center, which accepts Crimson Cash. Its chickpea fritter sandwich and rosemary fries remain on the menu.
Sally’s Sandwiches (Smith Campus Center, 1350 Massachusetts Ave.): Run by the Blackbird Doughnuts team, it serves a breakfast sandwich with fried eggs, bacon, cheese, avocado, a hash brown and spicy aioli. Boston Magazine lists opening times of 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends. The Smith Campus Center is open to the public.
About Thyme (1 Brattle Sq.): A fall 2026 newcomer serving counter-service Lebanese food, with wraps on saj-baked bread and labneh with toppings.
Oggi Gourmet (30 Dunster St.): Slices, salads and sandwiches on house-made bread, including a grilled jerk chicken sandwich.
Black Sheep Bagel Cafe (56 John F. Kennedy St.) and PopUp Bagels (1440 Massachusetts Ave.) cover breakfast. PopUp sells bagels with a three-per-order minimum and no slicing or sandwiches.
Late-night food in Harvard Square
Pinocchio’s Pizza & Subs (74 Winthrop St.) has served Sicilian-style pizza to students for more than 50 years, according to Eater Boston. Boston Magazine lists hours until midnight Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday, extended to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday during the school year (September through May). The menu also includes subs and baked ziti.
Tasty Burger (40 JFK St.) is listed as open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
Joe’s Pizza (3 Brattle St.), founded in Greenwich Village in 1975, opened in Harvard Square in fall 2023 and sells thin, foldable New York-style slices.
Felipe’s Taqueria (21 Brattle St.) grills steak and chicken over hickory, maple and oak, and its roof deck is a warm-weather draw.
Weekend brunch on a budget
The Painted Burro (32 Church St.) offers an all-you-can-eat brunch for $18, including tacos and huevos rancheros, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, according to Boston Magazine.
Tips for eating cheaply in the Square
- Harvard ID holders should ask about discounts; several are not posted.
- Campus-center counters such as Clover, Sally’s and Saloniki are open to the public, not just students.
- Getting there is cheaper too: the city’s fare-free Route 1 bus serves Harvard Square.
- Need caffeine for a study session? See our guide to Cambridge coffee shops.
