Terrestrial Bio Allston operations are now open: the drug-delivery company has moved its headquarters and a new manufacturing plant into Allston Labworks at 250 Western Ave., after a ribbon cutting on Oct. 28 with state economic development officials. The company announced the opening on Oct. 30, saying the site covers more than 40,000 square feet and will produce its needle-free microarray patches for clinical trials.
40,000+ sq. ft. in Allston · $2.27M in new state grants · $50M Series C in March · Phase 1 trial for its lead patch
What opened on Western Avenue
Terrestrial Bio, which until this year operated as Vaxess Technologies, makes a patch it calls Tacterra. Instead of an injection, the patch uses an array of tiny dissolvable tips to deliver a drug through the skin. According to the company’s announcement, the Allston facility combines its corporate headquarters, laboratories and a manufacturing line that uses automation, robotics and machine vision to make patches at clinical scale.
The building itself is Allston Labworks, a six-story life science building of about 281,000 square feet managed by King Street Properties, according to the property’s website. Terrestrial’s space is roughly 14% of the building by floor area (TBR calculation: 40,000 ÷ 281,000). Before the move, the company’s listed addresses were in Woburn.
The company’s lead program, VX-201, is a patch version of semaglutide, the GLP-1 drug sold for diabetes and weight loss. A Phase 1 study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, and the company has said the first participants were dosed in July 2026. Terrestrial raised a $50 million Series C round in March, when it also announced its new name.
The state money behind the move
Two state grants announced with the opening total $2,267,560 (TBR calculation): a $1,417,560 BioBoost award from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) and an $850,000 award from the Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2), run by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing.
The MLSC said in its own post that it has invested more than $4.2 million in the company over time. That includes more than $1.7 million through its tax incentive program, more than $1.4 million through Business Builds (the program formerly called BioBoost) and a $1 million Accelerator Loan made when the company was still Vaxess. Adding the M2I2 award, state-backed support reported by the two agencies comes to at least $5 million (TBR calculation, using minimum figures).

At the ribbon cutting, Economic Development Secretary Eric Paley said, “Massachusetts is the most curious place on earth,” according to the MLSC. Elizabeth Graham, the MLSC’s interim president and CEO, said, “Terrestrial is really what makes the Commonwealth such an amazing place to be.”
Our Take
Analysis by The Boston Report. Boston’s lab market has been working through a glut of vacant space, and an opening that pairs a headquarters with actual production is the kind of tenant landlords along Western Avenue have been courting. Manufacturing jobs tend to stay put once equipment is installed, which helps explain why the state’s manufacturing fund put money in alongside the life sciences agency.
The bigger question is clinical. A patch that delivers a GLP-1 without needles would land in one of the most crowded drug markets in the world, and VX-201 is still in early human testing. Phase 1 trials mainly test safety, so investors and the state will be watching for data before the Allston line has to scale beyond trial supply. For now, the opening adds a manufacturing employer to Allston at a time when larger local biotechs and venture-backed startups are both consolidating.
What to watch next
Terrestrial has not said how many people will work at the Allston site. Readers can follow the VX-201 study on ClinicalTrials.gov under NCT07673900. For more on the region’s suppliers, see our coverage of Entegris’s third quarter.
